Carlos Colon: The Road Less Traveled

Moving all the way across the country from South Carolina to Southern California is a big culture shock. It's a move that Carlos Colon made in order to chase his dream of playing college football. The former Hillcrest High School (SC) prospect finished his 2nd season at Pierce College in Los Angeles this year and he talks about his story inside with!

Carlos Colon Profile

Chasing his dream is precisely what Carlos Colon is doing. The former Hillcrest High School (SC) defensive end packed his bags and moved all the way from Greenville to Los Angeles California where he now plays at Pierce College in the JUCO ranks. It's a drastic change for anyone from the Carolinas but in order to get a chance to play college football it was an opportunity that Colon was not going to pass up.

Chasing that dream Colon sat down with and he discussed the biggest difference between playing on the high school and JUCO levels.

"At Hillcrest I played as a blocking tight end, but once I got to college I made the move to the other side of the ball and so far it has been a great move. The biggest thing I've learned since I've been in JUCO is the hours it takes to be a great college player. The hours in the weight room, watching film, and just learning how to be the best at your position. We have so many D1 coaches that come to visit my school and all they say is you have to be the best at your position if you want to play at the next level. The speed of the game is a lot faster in college too compared to high school."

This year Colon got his feet wet and played in a heavy rotation of linemen for Pierce he says.

"We play a total of eight defensive linemen every game so we rotated a lot. I ended up with 12 tackles and 3 quarterback hurries."

Right now Colon says that his biggest strengths on the field are his run stopping ability and being able to stand up and pass rush. The 6'2 240 pound prospect who also plays a little h-back says he'd like to improve on being able to drop back into coverage this off season to be better moving forward.

With next fall being his last year at Pierce Colon says he's hoping to step up his game even more although he's already hearing from a number of schools.

"I'm hearing from Western New Mexico (D2), Notre Dame College (D2), UC Davis (FCS) University of San Diego (FCS), Coastal Carolina (FCS), and Northern Illinois (BCS). I have an offer from Notre Dame College so far. I really like them along with UC Davis, University of San Diego, and Coastal Carolina."

Although his decision is nearly a year away Colon talked about what he feels are going to be the most important things for him when choosing a school.

"Some of the reasons for me will be the level of education, the level of the football, and the chances of playing right off the bat being a JUCO transfer."

Having to take the JUCO route Colon offered some advice to young prospects who are still in the high school ranks.

"I'd tell them just to work hard in the classroom and don't lose sight the last few months of senior year especially."

"I want to make my decision sometime around next Christmas."

Stay tuned as we'll continue to check back in with Colon as he continues to chase his dream.
