With a strong 2014 class of offensive linemen in the state of South Carolina one of the state's best just grabbed his first scholarship offer this week, North Augusta's Jake Whitley. SCPrepNation.com caught up with Whitley to talk about that offer and more in this exclusive interview.
Whitley's first offer came from Marshall and we asked the 6'4 290 pound prospect how it felt to land that elusive first offer and what he knows about the Thundering Herd.
"It felt great to get my first offer, it was somewhat of a relief."
"I don't know too much about Marshall, I'm going to visit April 8th and my recruiter is coach Mike Furrey."
The Herd aren't the only school Whitley is hearing from though. He told us about some of the schools who are actively recruiting him as of late.
So which of those programs are stepping to the forefront and pushing the hardest right now in terms of recruiting Whitley?
"Marshall, NC State, UNC, and Georgia Tech are recruiting me the hardest."
With so many schools currently in the mix the 2014 standout has lined up some visits and he also told us about some schools he's already checked out recently as well. The talented lineman will be logging some serious miles in the next couple of months seeing some of the southeast's top schools.
"I've visted UNC and Mississippi State already. With UNC I really like the campus and atmosphere as well as the coaching staff and the offense. At Mississippi State I like the offensive line coach and the fact they play in the SEC."
"I'm visiting NC State this Saturday, Wake Forest the 23rd, Georgia Tech the 30th, Georgia April 6th, Marshall the 8th, Virginia Tech the 9th, Virginia the 10th, Maryland the 11th, and then back to UNC on the 13th."
Asked to critique his own game Whitley says that he feels his strengths are his pass blocking and pulling ability. He says he'd like to improve on his run game blocking next season.
The North Augusta prospect also told us what he'll be looking for most in a potential college destination.
"When I commit it'll be to the school I feel most comfortable at, how the coaches are, and the style of offense that will fit me the best."
SCPrepNation.com will bring you updates with Whitley when he returns from some of those upcoming visits or when more offers roll in so keep it right here for more with South Carolina's top high school prospects.
