2014 Intro: Byrnes S/OLB Avery James

One of the most overlooked aspects of the Byrnes football team is their defense each and every year. The 2014 class of their "Strike Force" defense has play makers all over and LB/S prospect Avery James already holds a trio of offers early on. The 6'1 190 pound prospect is hoping a strong senior season will lead to many more offers in the near future...

Avery James Profile

The Byrnes Rebels reload each and every year and their 2014 class is no different. One prospect who has emerged on the radar for the Rebels' "Strike Force" defense is senior linebacker Avery James. The 6'1 190 pound prospect has become a play maker for the Rebels and schools are starting to take note. In fact, James has 3 offers already to his resume. We sat down with James as he talks about the schools he's been hearing from already and outlook for his senior season with the Rebels.

"I play as an outside linebacker or strong safety at Byrnes but most colleges are recruiting me as a safety."

Apparently a number of schools have taking a liking to James as he has those 3 offers already. He shared that list and other schools that are actively recruiting him currently.

"I've got offers from Liberty, UT-Chattanooga, and Richmond so far. I'm hearing from Georgia Southern, Central Missouri, Elon, and Wingate also."

His nose for the ball and play making abilities are clear and evident looking at his numbers.

Last year as a junior James had 60 tackles, 4 forced fumbles, 3 fumble recoveries, 5 tackles for loss, and 4 sacks.

James talked about the areas he feels his strengths are and what areas he'd like to improve upon currently.

"I'd say my leadership, play recognition, being a ball hawk, and knowledge of the game are my biggest strengths right now. I'd like to improve one making better reads and taking better angles to the ball."

Chatting with the 6'1 195 pound prospect we asked him who he'd say his game compares to and he had this to say.

"I'd say I'm a mixture of Ray Lewis and Jarvis Jones. Like Ray Lewis because I'm always around the ball and my leadership. Like Jarvis Jones because of my pass rushing ability off the edge."

With FCS schools taking a look already James is hoping that he'll draw some interest soon from some FBS programs as well. He shared a list of schools he's hoping to hear from soon.

"I'd like to hear from Georgia, Tennessee, Clemson, Wofford, North Carolina, and Wake Forest."

The 2014 prospect talked about his outlook for the Rebels this season.

"My goal is for us to go to state again and win but for us to build a closer brotherhood and establish a bond like nobody has ever known."

"Team comes first and foremost but on a personal level I'd like to make All-Area and either the North-South All-Star Game or the Shrine Bowl! I'm a team captain and a 2-year starter, I'd just like to look back and be able to say I have given it my all!"

James reports a 3.0 GPA in the classroom and will take the ACT on September 21st.
