One of the state's top 2015 basketball prospects, Hillcrest shooting guard Randall Shaw has been on a tear so far this season. The 6'3 190 pound baller has been electric for coach Reggie Choplin's Rams so far. We caught up with Shaw as he is hearing from a number of colleges currently and already holds an in-state offer.
"Right now I'm averaging 22 points per game. I'm not sure about the rebounds and assists right now coach hasn't told me," Shaw said.
When it comes to scoring Shaw has had some big time performances so far during his junior season.
"I had a 40 point game down at the beach against Whale Branch High. I've had some 30 point games and a couple of games with 25 and above too."
Currently Shaw says the Rams record is 15-3 and they are playing well. In doing so Shaw has fielded interest from quite a few colleges already and he talked about the schools he's hearing from currently.
As of right now Shaw says that The College of Charleston is recruiting him the hardest out of that group. The 2015 prospect has taken just one visit thus far and it was to see Charleston.
"I liked the location! I really liked the people's personalities that I got to meet too."
Being in Charleston we asked if he hopped over to visit The Citadel with an offer on the table from the Bulldogs.
"No sir I didn't. We were going to but it got too late."
Shaw and the Rams have played some good teams this season but one player in particular stands out as the best one he's played against this season.
"Emerius Logan from White Knoll High School would be the toughest player I've went up against so far."
Shaw says right now his strengths are his ability to get to the basket, finishing strong, and his ability to knock down the three pointer. As far as areas he'd like to improve on he says he'd like to improve guarding the ball and rebounding.
"I can play defense I just feel that to play at the next level I need to improve on those two areas."
The 2015 prospect says he hopes his play this season and during the coming AAU season will attract more schools, especially ones in the ACC or SEC conferences.
Shaw doesn't like to pattern or compare his game to any particular players out there but he says a lot of people say his game is very similar to that of a NBA All-Star.
"Everyone says I play just like James Harden and I'm left handed."
The Hillcrest prospect already knows what he will be looking at closely when choosing a college destination.
"I would say that the coaching staff, atmosphere, location, and the education that I receive will be the most important things to me. I want to major in engineering."
Shaw reports a 3.8 GPA currently and takes pride in his work in the classroom as well as on the court. He has already taken the SAT twice and ACT once.
