Freddie Phillips has been on the recruiting radar for quite some time and as he's heading towards his senior season the 6'2 185 pound prospect has started to pick up more steam. Consider the fact that he picked up another offer and landed some more awards at a combine over the weekend, don't be surprised if he starts to pick up even more.
On Friday the 2015 Pelion high safety/athlete messaged us with the news of his latest offer.
"UNC Charlotte offered me today."
The offer from the 49ers came surprisingly without much interaction between the two parties. But after the offer Phillips says he'll take a closer look at their program.
"No I hadn't visited or heard from them before. My coach sent out my film and they liked it. I think I might go check out one of their spring practices or spring game."
As we mentioned before, on Saturday Phillips competed in the VTO combine at Dutch Fork. He told us how he fared against some of the state's top prospects.
"I got awards at VTO for Top Performer and Best Athlete."
Phillips says he worked out at safety and wide receiver at Dutch Fork. A new trainer has helped Phillips take his skills up a notch or two and he shared his experience with us.
"My speed and footwork are two areas I've been trying to focus on improving this off season. I train with coach Ramon Robinson now. It has been going great. Catching balls from quarterbacks like Chad Kelly (Clemson) and Kelly Bryant everyday has really improved my hands. My testing has improved too. I'm running a solid 4.52 now."
The 2015 standout says his next scheduled visit is to one of the schools who has already offered him.
"Coach Doeren at North Carolina State wants me, Kelly Bryant, and Michael Barnett to come up on the 22nd for a visit together."
He made it clear that the Wolfpack are coming after him the hardest right now out of everyone that is involved currently. He did share with us some schools he'd like to hear more from in the near future too.
