We spotlighted 2015 Mauldin High wide receiver Taz Richardson a couple years ago and during his junior season he rewrote the record books at Mauldin. We caught up with Richardson to update his recruitment and talked about his junior season.
"I had 70 catches for 1,068 yards and 9 receiving touchdowns. I also had another touchdown on a punt return."
Being one of the top options for All-State quarterback Dre Massey the 2015 prospect earned his share of recognition as well.
"I was named the team's offensive MVP and was named to the All-Region Team. I also broke three school records this season. I broke the records for most receiving yards in a single season, most catches in a season, and most catches in a single game."
We asked Richardson to talk about his most memorable game during his junior season and its a game that people still talk about here in the Upstate.
"My best game was against Gaffney. That's when I broke my first record and almost my second one. I had 12 catches for 166 yards. It was so memorable for me because we were 1:22 away from beating the 2012 state champions."
Right now Richardson says he's hearing from a trio of schools and he talked about the latest with those programs.
The 2015 prospect hasn't taken any visits lately but that will change in the near future apparently.
"I haven't taken any visits yet but the UNC coach told me he would get me up there for a visit. I went to a NC State game as a recruit but that's it."
Richardson says Coach Ron West is his primary recruiter for North Carolina while Coach Dez Kitchings is his recruiter for NC State.
The 6'1 180 pound prospect talked about his previous visit to Raleigh to see the Wolfpack.
"It has a really nice campus and the football stadium. I like how the coach showed me love while I was there."
We also touched on what areas of his game he feels are the biggest strengths and areas for improvement heading towards his senior season next year.
"First and foremost I want to improve my blocking along with my speed. As far as strengths go I'll have to say getting open quick, making hard catches, making moves, and getting into tight spaces. I'm also pretty good with yards after the catch too."
He talked with us about his goals for his senior season next year as well.
"To focus more on blocking. Score more touchdown and overall to have an even better season than I did this past year."
We'll have more updates with Richardson as we expect his stock to start rising once his junior film starts to make the rounds.
