You never know what you're going to get when you take in a high school football game. Last season we went to the York-Boiling Springs game with a couple of prospects already in mind and came away with 6 or 7 that we have since featured, the latest being 2015 York quarterback Deshaw Andrews. Winning the game on a late field goal Andrews rallied his troops in dramatic fashion and at 6'4 245 pounds he's a prospect who is already hearing from an ACC school.
In that matchup Andrews and York went up and down the field against Boiling Springs in a high scoring affair but we came away impressed with the big quarterback who at the time looked a little raw but has a ton of potential. We caught up with him for the latest on Tuesday.
"Last season I had 2,875 yards passing and 31 touchdowns. I also ran for 600+ yards too."
Recruiting hasn't really taken off for Andrews yet but one ACC school has made their interest known he says.
"I'm hearing from just North Carolina State right now. They are recruiting me and they are coming to visit me they said. They also want me to come to one of their camps soon and I plan on doing that."
There are some other schools out there that Andrews says he'd like to hear from in the near future along with the Wolfpack.
For his efforts last season Andrews says he earned All-State honors and also won an award from WBTV (Charlotte NC television station).
The physical attributes are hard to overlook standing 6'4 245 pounds in the pocket but its the presence he has as well that is intriguing. He talked about a player that he likes to compare his game to in more ways than one.
"Cam Newton because he is a pass first type of quarterback and he makes good decisions. When he runs he makes good plays too."
"I feel like I'm a pass first type of quarterback too and I run when I have to."
Andrews says he is working hard to get better at reading defenses and his ball placement when throwing the ball as well.
Looking ahead to his senior season next year he outlined some straightforward goals he hopes to accomplish with his team and for himself.
"My goal for the team is to win a state championship and my personal goal is to help my team win that state championship and to be able to play at the next level."
We'll have more updates with Deshaw Andrews as we anticipate more schools to come calling once his junior season film circulates given his size and skill set.
