The past 7 days have been pretty eventful for 2016 Hanahan wide receiver Samuel Denmark. Over the weekend he helped Hanahan win another track and field state title playing a huge role in that victory. On Thursday night he added another momentous occasion to his life by grabbing his first scholarship offer and Denmark gave us all the details surrounding his superb week.
"We won the AAA state championship this past weekend. One of the relay teams I was on we came in first (4x400m) and the other came in second (4x100m). I finished second in the 100 meters (10.92) and third in the 200 meters (22.12). It feels great because I'm a two time state champ in track. I'm actually proud of myself in the 100 because the guy I lost to is actually committed to run track in college at Arkansas State so he will be gone next year."
The 6'1 174 pound prospect has been hearing from quite a few colleges for his talents on the football field but the news he got on Thursday was somewhat unexpected.
"Notre Dame said they would like to offer me as soon as they can. I was excited and shocked to hear it!"
Denmark says coach Mike Elston verbally offered him.
Smiling ear to ear Denmark says he also talked with former Hanahan wide receiver Chris Brown who is currently playing for Notre Dame. Brown was in town to talk to his high school team before their Spring Game. Ironically Denmark wears the same number Brown did at Hanahan, #2. So what did Brown say after learning his young understudy landed his first offer from the Fighting Irish?
"He was proud for me and gave me some good words of advice."
Last season as a sophomore Denmark had 40 catches for 1,020 yards and 10 touchdowns.
After the initial shock set in we asked Denmark again how it felt to land his first scholarship offer from a football program like Notre Dame.
"It feels very good, I feel excited about it all but I'm not satisfied to the fullest because I know there's still a lot of work that has to be done both on the field and in the classroom."
Landing his first offer Denmark says eventually he'd like to visit South Bend but he's not certain if he'll be able to do so this off season.
As we mentioned before a number of schools have been by recently to show their interest in Denmark and he shared that list of schools with us.
Thursday Denmark called Elston and the rest they say is history.
We'll have more updates with Samuel Denmark as he appears well on his way to a big-time recruitment as we predicted with a Notre Dame offer to kickstart things as his first offer!
