Emerging as one of the top playmakers for the Lexington High School last season was sophomore wide receiver Jayson Hooper. The 6'1 190 pound prospect has seen quite a few schools come through after a strong season. One school has already stepped up and given him his first scholarship offer. We talked with Hopper about his recruitment and season recently.
"I had 545 receiving yards and 720 all-purpose yards."
Looking back on his sophomore season Hopper says one game in particular stands out as his very best.
"My best game was against White Knoll, I ended up having 5 catches for 90 yards and a touchdown. It was so great because it was an away rivalry game and we shut them out 50-0."
The 6'1 190 pound wide receiver talked about what his strengths are currently and areas he'd like to improve on the most heading into his senior season next year.
"I'd say beating defensive backs with my routes and being physical off the ball are my biggest strengths."
"I'm working on getting faster and being quicker with my feet and also just working on being smoother with everything."
Hopper says he likes to watch or mimic one player that he really enjoys watching and learning from.
His work on the field hasn't gone unnoticed either as Hopper already holds on scholarship offer thus far and he talked about what it felt like to receive his first offer.
"I've got an offer from Appalachian State. It felt absolutely amazing. Everyone around me was congratulating me including my family and it just felt like it was another stepping stone to my next goal."
The Mountaineers aren't the only school showing interest in the sophomore from Lexington either.
"Charlotte, Appalachian State, and Old Dominion all have been to practices. Clemson, South Carolina, Marshall, and North Carolina have all been to the school to talk to my coaches but not to practice. I've got lots of mail from Clemson and Florida State. I've also gotten some from Auburn, Georgia, South Carolina, and Wake Forest."
The 2016 wide receiver also plans on hitting the camp circuit to try and impress some more schools soon as well.
"i'm going up to Clemson on June 9-11, Appalachian State June 11-13, and South Carolina June 25th for camps."
As for his junior season Hopper has set some goals for his team and himself on a personal level and he shared those with us.
"I just want to win and get our team to the playoffs. For me, I want to cross the 1,000 yards receiving mark with at least 15 touchdowns."
