Yes it is way too early to talk about class of 2018 prospects but not every prospect heading to the 9th grade next year looks or plays like rising Byrnes freshman wide receiver Demarcus Gregory. We heard about the 6'2 175 pound prospect and caught up with him to talk about what he'd like to do over the next few seasons and what schools he'd love to hear from during that time as well.
We sat down and chopped it up with Gregory for almost an hour and during that time it's easy to tell he's not your typical 8th grader. Well-spoken and mannered the 2018 prospect is already a solid student of the game. He already knows what he wants to do and has a strong idea of what it will take to get to that point come time to graduate in 4 plus years.
Gregory grew quite a bit as he was playing running back for quite some time but now checking in at 6'2 175 pounds he's made the transition to wide receiver where he lined up for the Rebels' 9th grade team as a 8th grader this past season.
"No sir it wasn't a hard transition for me because at running back you're coming out of the backfield but at receiver you're doing things in open space and that was my thing. Getting in open space so it wasn't that really hard of a transition."
Still a young prospect Gregory already knows where his strengths are and what aspects of his game he wants to improve on the most this off season to get even better.
"I'd say going up in the air and getting the ball is my biggest strength right now. I just want to continue to get stronger and faster to get better."
The 2018 prospect talked a great deal about a player that he likes to emulate and the style and appearance are very apparent.
"Sammy Watkins is my favorite player. I want to get my routes and hands like his are and keep improving my football IQ."
With Byrnes having a long history of outstanding wide receivers for more than a decade it would appear that Gregory has a chance to be one of the next stars to emerge out of powerhouse program. So when his time does come what will Gregory bring to the table for the Rebels over the next four seasons?
"I have a good work ethic and can be a good leader. I'd like to help lead my team to a state championship. I want to receive All-State honors and have 1,000+ receiving yards every year and my senior year win Mr. Football."
Given his most recent growth spurt we asked Gregory just what have his doctor's prognosticated for him in terms of growth.
"They said I have a chance to be 6'4 or better."
Like we stated earlier it is still extremely early in the process but the 2018 prospect knows exactly what schools he'd love to hear more from during these next four seasons.
Gregory was set to camp with some schools this off season but suffered a hip injury and decided to shut things down to fully heal for next season. With 4 more seasons ahead of him time is on Gregory's side, now it's a matter of just how fast he ascends up the ladder during that time. Our guess? He'll be one of the state's best and quite possibly a national level prospect in 2018 if he continues on the upward trend he's projecting right now.
