The Byrnes Rebels wide receiver corps is strong year in and year out and this year is no different. Their 2016 wide receiver class is headlined by Chavis Dawkins who already holds an ACC offer. We caught up with Dawkins early this week to discuss what has been going on as of late.
Not long ago the 6'2 195 pound receiver was given 3-star status by the national analysts at Scout.com. During this off season while at a 7on7 tourney at North Carolina State Dawkins picked up his first offer from the Wolfpack. He recalled the moment when he first got the news.
"It felt really good! I was so surprised when they offered me!"
The relationship with the Wolfpack staff continues to stay strong apparently. He also talked about what he likes best about the ACC school.
"Yes sir, we talk a lot, like every weekend or every other weekend."
"The coaches are really cool and their jerseys are really nice! And they pass the ball a lot which is big to me."
Dawkins says other that have been recruiting him as of late are North Carolina, Auburn, and Tennessee. He says the Tar Heels and Tigers are recruiting him the hardest out of that trio currently. The 2016 prospect says he will definitely try and take some visits this season.
"Well after we get back from Cali I'm going to a Auburn game and a North Carolina game for visits."
The Rebels who are 2-0 on the season will travel to California to take on fellow national power De La Salle in a few weeks. Dawkins says things are no different for the Rebels heading into the game.
"We have the same mentality we have every game and that is to try our very best, play our hearts out, use our speed, and win! That is the plan!"
As for the rest of the season Dawkins says winning another state title for Byrnes is the goal for his team this season. In the grand scheme of things he has a "we" approach to things.
"I just want to help my team in the very best way I can so we can get a state ring!"
Dawkins says, "What I can do after the ball is in my hands," is probably the biggest strengths of his game right now. He also talked about what aspects of his game he tried to work on the hardest this off season to get even better.
"I worked hard at catching the ball in traffic mostly."
Education, early playing time, style of play, coaching staff, and atmosphere all will play key roles for Dawkins when looking at potential schools.
With NC State being his lone offer currently they are out front early as he sported a "NC State Football" shirt during our stop yesterday at Byrnes after their practice.
Since the end of last season the 2016 prospect has made improvements in the weight room. Taking his bench press up to 290 pounds from 275, his squat to 380 pounds from 340, and lowered his fastest 40 time to 4.47 seconds.
With such a talented group of wide receivers Dawkins, Tavin Richardson, Braylin Collins, and Jaylan Foster all share catches in a prolific Byrnes offense. Expect more schools to come calling for Dawkins though and we'll keep you up to date here on SCPrepNation.com!
