We hit the road last Friday to check out the matchup between Union County and Spartanburg. There were some known prospects coming into the game but we also discovered a new budding standout who has a bright future as well. Enter 2016 Union County wide receiver Roscoe Johnson. The 6'2 180 pound prospect made a number of plays during the night for the Yellow Jackets including their lone score as they lost 32-7. We caught up with Johnson over the weekend to talk about his recruitment and more.
Union County's record is now 1-1 after the loss but they defeated a usually strong Gaffney squad to start their season. Johnson has been a big part of their success early on. He recalled his numbers so far through a pair of games for us.
"I've got 14 catches for 232 yards and a touchdown."
He made some really nice catches on Friday and he showed excellent speed and ball skills after securing catches. That elusiveness and speed were on display and he's backing it up with his numbers early on. Spartanburg paid a great deal of attention to teammate Shi Smith and Johnson took advantage of it when he got his chances.
He sat out last season but is making his presence known early this year. In fact, Johnson has already heard from a few schools he tells us.
"I've been getting mail from Appalachian State, Georgia, and Louisville so far. I'd like to hear more from Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, and anybody else that's interested in recruiting me I'd love to hear from them all."
Potential college coaches will be glad to know that Johnson currently reports a GPA "between 3.3 and 3.4" he says.
When asked about his game and what he feels his strengths and areas for improvement are he had this to say.
"My route running, my catching abilities, and my speed are my biggest strengths right now. I'd like to improve on getting more consistent, getting stronger, being better at high pointing the ball, and getting out of my breaks better."
Johnson and the Yellow Jackets have faced two AAAA powers early on in their season and he talked about what his team's goals are moving forward as well as his own goals.
"To finish, that's been our saying all off season. If everybody finishes during the game then we win. I think we've got a good shot of winning the rest of the regular season and going deep into the playoffs."
"My personal goals are to just get better everyday at practice, in the weight room, and in the classroom. Just to help my team everyday and hopefully get some offers coming in."
The 2016 prospect already has an idea as to what he'd like to pursue in college and he also shared with us what he'll consider strongly when choosing a potential college in a few years when the time comes.
"I want to major in business management and most top football schools have that. Having early playing time and good coaching will also be most important to me as well."
SCPrepNation.com will have more updates with Roscoe Johnson as he looks like he'll be another Yellow Jacket wide receiver to watch during the next two seasons. For now check out his testing measurables in the weight room from last spring.
