As one of the highest rated prospects in the state in the 2016 recruiting class Lake Marion cornerback James Valdez is a highly sought after commodity. The 4-star prospect is hearing from a who's who list of schools from across the country. Cornerback is one of the toughest positions on the field and Valdez has the right combination of size, speed, instincts, ability, and swagger to be one of the very best. We caught up with Valdez on Thursday to talk about his recruitment which includes a recent visit to an in-state school who's already offered him.
"So far this year I've been to South Carolina," Valdez said.
We asked him how things went during his trip to Columbia and if he got a chance to talk with the Gamecock coaches and players while there?
The Gamecock defense has struggled early on this season and we asked Valdez if it has caused concern for him or instilled a sense of confidence that he might be able to go in and contribute early if he continues to work hard and improve his game?
"You know it doesn't matter where I go, my number one priority is to go in and play early. I'm going to push myself to that point where I can be great and not just average."
Asked to rate his visit on a 1-10 scale the 2016 standout replied, "I'd give it a 8."
With 5 offers already in hand from South Carolina, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, and South Carolina State there are plenty other suitors out there for Valdez. He shared a long list of suitors and also talked about some schools he plans to visit this season at some point.
"Louisville, Oregon, Clemson, Virginia Tech, and East Carolina have been on me the hardest lately. I plan on going to visit Georgia, NC State, Florida, North Carolina, and Tennessee. I haven't decided on any dates yet though but plan to soon."
