It was an overcast day on Saturday after a week of steady rain in Spartanburg and the rain held off for the entire 2015 EPT Football Skills Showcase except for one or two drops that fell on early on. Making a long ride up from Wilson High School was 2016 wide receiver Christian Bruce who has been on the radar for quite some time and has held an ACC offer for quite a few months. After a exceptionally strong performance at the Showcase we talked with Bruce about how things have gone with his recruitment as of late.
When asked which programs are showing him the most interest consistently he replied, "NC State, Wake Forest, East Carolina, and Charlotte I'd say."
Things have been relatively quiet for Bruce with his recruitment but he turned things up on Saturday making play after play throughout the day. He was dominant early and looked smooth in doing so. Bruce's game isn't sheer speed but it's the fluidity he shows and how easy he makes it look. There were quite a few highlight reel catches for the 6'3 180 pound prospect from Wilson and we happened to catch many of them on film which we'll feature later on this week.
The 2016 prospect gave us some surprising news when asked about visits this off season.
"No sir I haven't been on any visits yet. I missed one this past weekend because I attended the EPT Skills Showcase. I was supposed to go to ECU."
Asked about where his strengths and areas for improvement concerning his game Bruce had this to say, "My quickness, the ability to high point the ball, and the mind set that I have are my biggest strengths right now. I'd like to improve my speed, strength, and elusiveness to get better moving forward."
Bruce will start making some camp visits and he plans on attending camps at NC State, East Carolina, Wake Forest, South Carolina, and Clemson.
The Wilson star ssys a trio of in-state schools really interest him right now along with NC State and Navy.
"I'd like to hear more from South Carolina, Clemson, and South Carolina State."
The 2016 prospect says he'll consider a gamut of things when choosing a potential destination but team chemistry, leadership, and education will be at the forefront.
"I would like to make my decision on National Signing Day but if a college wanted me to commit early then I wouldn't have a problem with that."
With a sterling performance against some of the top defensive backs in the state on Saturday Bruce clearly cemented his position as one of the top wide receivers in the state and was impressive in doing so. He talked about the showcase setting and his thoughts on the event in its first year.
"It was pretty nice! What I like best about the event was how the wide receivers coaches gave us drills to help with our skills. I also really liked how they let us compete to see who was the best."
We'll continue to monitor his recruitment in the coming months as he hits the camp circuit. If he plays like he did on Saturday don't be surprised to see his offer list grow. Bruce is set to get back with us with his junior season stats and he says that his team has yet to max out in the weight room since early in the season.
