Yafari Werts Profile

Almost as quietly as Yafari Werts is off the field many people haven't noticed that he's just a pair of offers away from having ten scholarship offers to his name. The 2016 signal caller from Newberry lets his play on the field do most of the talking and he's put together an imnpressive haul early on. We sat down with Werts on Monday to talk about his offers, plans moving forward, and timeline in making a decision.

"I landed my latest offer from Wofford today. Coach Lang offered me. It was my first time hearing from them. He just came to the school and told me I was their guy," Werts said.

The Terriers join previous offers from Georgia Southern, Appalachian State, Jacksonville State, Charleston Southern, Furman, Newberry, and Gardner-Webb. We asked Werts which schools are recruiting him the hardest as of late and there's a school who hasn't offered who's showing a strong interest in him he says. He talked about both schools who've been chasing him the hardest as of late.

"Georgia Southern and even though they haven't offered, North Carolina. Coach Brewer (UNC) even came to watch me play tonight."

Werts says the Tar Heels have informed him that "they like me as a quarterback and that they want to see me at the "Freak Show". They said they are gonna come in the spring to watch a practice."

"With Georgia Southern I really like everything! The coaches love me, I'm their number one guy in 2016. I'll have a chance to be a four year starter, it's not 80,000 on Saturdays but it's filled up with fans every home game. They also play schools in the power conferences to a close game."

So is there a chance that Werts could make an early decision?

"No I won't. That's something I need to think about. I wanted to announce in front of my family and friends though, so you'd be the first to know after I tell my parents. It'll be later on in the recruiting process before I decide."

"What's going to be really important to me is wherever I feel wanted at and when will I have the chance to compete for a starting position."

The Newberry quarterback talked about some future camps as well.

"I plan to go to North Carolina, get back to Georgia Southern, and maybe Florida since they didn't sign a quarterback last year. Just to get in front of them and hopefully catch their eye."

"I'm just going with the flow enjoying everything about the recruiting process right now."

"This may sound crazy but TCU and UCLA. I'm not planning on going to camp there or anything but I hope my film makes it to their coaches so they can check me out and possibly go from there. Also Miami, Kentucky, and Maryland."

The 6'0 180 pound dual-threat prospect who lead Newberry to the AAA state championship game before losing to South Pointe shared some more interesting details with us.

"I have a huge chip on my shoulder from just being slept on. When I get my shot, I'm going to make every school who said I couldn't play quarterback pay."
