2016 Intro: Darlington PG Frankie Johnson

Its hard to argue with 2016 Darlington PG Frankie Johnson's resume having been to 3 straight lower state championship games already in his career. He's hoping to lead his team to greater heights next season as a senior in hoisting a state championship trophy ultimately. SCPrepNationHoops sat down with the dynamic and speedy 5'6 playmaker about his career and recruitment.

Being a starting point guard is a task within itself, starting at point guard in every varsity game of your career is rare. In the case of Frankie Johnson, he’s done it in every game since the 8th grade at Darlington HS under coach Ken Howle. The Falcons have won 20 or more games in each season that Johnson has been a starter. In that span Darlington has played in 3 straight lower state championship games (2013, 2014, & 2015) and 1 state championship game (2014). In other words Frankie has consistently performed on the biggest stages as he heads into his senior year. SCPrepNationHoops sat down with Johnson to talk with him about a number of things.

Standing 5’6 155 pounds Johnson is solidly built like a tank with cat like quickness and the innate ability to finish at the rim. As a junior Frankie averaged 19.5 points, 6.3 assists, 4.6 rebounds, and 4 steals leading Darlington to a final 4 finish in Class AAA. He’s the 2-time Region 6-AAA MVP, 2-time HSSR & SCBCA All-State Class AAA team, HSSR All-Rookie team, WPDE All-Zone team, and 2014-15 Mr. Hoop Zone finalist.

Frankie talked about going into his senior year as a 4 year starter and where his game needs to be.

“I really have to step up and be the leader this year. This journey is coming to an end, it’s the final ride for me.” “I need to control the pace of the game and be more vocal this year.” “Since my 8th grade year, I have become more of a scoring threat rather than just a defensive player. I have more confidence in my shot.”

I asked him who in particular does he try to pattern his gave after and with no hesitation he said, “Ty Lawson.”

Playing at a high level in front of college coaches with Darlington & with his AAU team UBA Johnson has received some solid recruiting interest.

“I’ve heard from Coastal Carolina, Howard, SC State, Winthrop, Citadel, Coker, and North Greenville. My only offer so far is from Newberry.”

I asked Frankie does he have a preference as it relates to schools and he said, “I would like to play Division 1 but I’ll just be thankful to any college for giving me a chance to play at the next level.”

Attending Mayo High School for Math, Science & Technology in Darlington, there is no secret that Johnson is a solid student posting a 3.5 GPA and awaiting his SAT score. Johnson also stated that, “Education and playing style will definitely be the biggest factors when I choose a college where I want to major in Sports Medicine.”

It’s obvious to see that Frankie is one of the top point guards in a loaded class statewide as well as nationally at that position. We will continue to follow his progress this summer with UBA and his senior year.
