One of the state's top running backs in 2016, Fort Dorchester's Datron James landed his first scholarship offer on Sunday and he gave us the good news and more.
"Army just offered me," James messaged us.
So how did it feel to finally land his first scholarship offer after a strong junior season that saw him run for big numbers for one of the state's top AAAA teams?
"I'm truly blessed. I'm really excited about this offer, because of how prestigious Arm is both academically and athletically. They like my grades mostly, I have a 3.4 core GPA and they say they like my running style too. They liked how I run between the tackles in film and I'm being recruiting as a B-back."
There are plenty of other schools who are currently in the mix for James as well he informed us.
"Furman, ETSU, Campbell, SC State, Charleston Southern, Western Carolina, and Wofford."
Outside of Army the 2016 back told us that ETSU is also recruiting him the hardest out of everyone right now. He just left a pair of Southern Conference schools and talked about those visits.
"I went to camp at ETSU on Friday and Furman yesterday. I strained my hamstring at the Furman camp so I wasn't able to compete but I haven't heard back from ETSU yet since the camp."
This past season James showcased his talents for Fort Dorchester amassing 278 carries for 1,788 yards and 18 touchdowns. Those numbers earned him All-State, All-Lowcountry, and All-County honors. He talked about some of the goals he'd like to reach next year as a senior.
"I'd like to have a 2,000 yard season with 20+ touchdowns, have no fumbles, and no sacks allowed caused by my missed blocking assignments."
James says his "vision and ability to run through tackles" are his biggest strengths right now as a back. He also chimed in on some areas he'd like to strengthen to be even better come next season.
"I'd like to improve my speed and my ability to make the safety miss after passing the linebackers."
With the offer from Army already in hand his strength in the classroom is already apparent. He talked about his grades and what he'll look at closely when choosing a potential college destination.
"I have a 3.8 weighted GPA. Education and graduation rates will be the most important of all to me. Field of study too. Atmosphere means a lot too and the coaching staff means the most. All of those are important to an extent."
We'll continue to track Datron James' recruitment moving forward as the Lowcountry prospect is still flying under the radar. Don't be surprised to see him break the 2,000 yard mark behind a large and experienced offensive line. If he does, expect those offers to continue to roll in for the outstanding student-athlete.
