Last year was a strong one for 2016 Lakewood offensive tackle Ralph Singleton. He was named an All-Region selection and picked up player of the week honors from the Sumter Touchdown Club as a junior. The 6'5 250 pound prospect has picked up interest from a number of colleges thus far including a pair of offers. He's still a fairly unknown commodity outside of the immediate area but he's hoping that will change soon. We sat down with Singleton to talk about his recruitment, game, and plans for the future.
"Last year I usually graded out in the high 80's or mid 90's. I had 36 knockdowns and 14 pancakes."
Singleton is also playing defensive end for Lakewood this year and he's had some success through the first 4 games.
"I'm just playing this year but so far I've got 20 total tackles, 12.5 solo tackles, and 1 sack."
The 2016 prospect has a long list of schools that he's heard from thus far in his recruiting process and he shared them with us.
"I've been hearing from Presbyterian, Coastal Carolina, Furman, North Greenville, The Citadel, Charleston Southern, Charlotte, Georgia Southern, and Navy."
He's already made a trio of visits and gave us a quick synopsis of each one.
"I've visited Coastal Carolina, The Citadel, and Presbyterian just this past weekend."
"My favorite part of the trip to Coastal was just the atmosphere of the game with the fans. The coaches said they can't wait to see me later on for the official visit. With The Citadel I liked the discipline and the coaches there said the same thing about wanting to see me on my official visit."
As stated before Singleton already holds a pair of offers from in-state schools, Presbyterian and North Greenville. He plans on taking visits to both along with more schools he says.
"i'm planning on visiting Presbyterian (Sept. 26th), Georgia Southern, Charleston Southern, Charlotte, Furman, and North Greenville."
We asked Singleton what his current strengths were right now as an offensive lineman and he had this to say, "Being lengthy and athletic because it's rare to find an offensive lineman who can run a 4.71 second 40 yard dash and benching 330 pounds."
Singleton says he wants to continue improving his run blocking skills but acknowledged that he's already made some strides in doing so since last season.
The Lakewood standout says there is one particular player that he really looks up to and shared that with us.
"I look up to Larry Allen because of his strength and his footwork was phenomenal."
Asked to talk about what factors he'll consider the most when choosing an eventual college destination he said, "My education, it's not even the football aspect first but football does matter as well, but then the coaches and players plus my family. I just want to go to the right school and be successful for myself and my family."
Singleton reports a 4.1 GPA in the classroom and says he has scored an 890 on the two-part SAT. He's already qualified but is retaking the test to improve his scores even further. He says he would like to major in sports medicine in college.
