Shrine Bowl: WR Chavis Dawkins Update

It's hard to call a Shrine Bowl selection a sleeper especially from Byrnes High School but 2016 WR Chavis Dawkins has flown under the radar considering the monster senior season he put together with over 1,300 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns scoring on 25% of his catches. A big, physical wideout who can take it to the house anytime he touches it Dawkins hasn't picked up any new offers recently but a familiar face stopped by this week from a school he's long called a favorite from the SEC.

With the swirling news coming out of Columbia with the hire of new South Carolina Gamecock head football coach Will Muschamp this week the new Gamecock staff hit the ground running.  One of their new hires is a familiar face here in the Palmetto State and he checked in on 2016 Byrnes wide receiver Chavis Dawkins who was selected to this year's Shrine Bowl team.

"Yes sir, South Carolina came by today.  Coach Bentley came and he was just saying that they're going to start talking with me more now," Dawkins told us.

Bentley is new Gamecock running backs coach Bobby Bentley who coached Dawkins' Byrnes team for years and built it into a national powerhouse.

In one of our previous interviews with Dawkins he informed us that the Gamecocks were one of his favorites, so did not really being recruited prior to the new staff change his feelings towards the SEC schoo and did it put them behind some of the other schools who've been involved for quite some time alreadyl?

"Yes sir they're still a favorite of mine.  No sir, not really."

With the fellow in-state wide receiver Bryan Edwards decommitting from the Gamecocks it appears the new staff wants to make sure Dawkins is in the mix should Edwards indeed commit elsewhere.  With them rebuilding we asked him if he was interested in becoming a part of the rebuilding process.

"Yes sir. Most definitely."

Dawkins says as of late Appalachian State and Vanderbilt have been pushing pretty hard for him lately.  He holds an offer from App State but not from Vanderbilt.  He has a former teammate at App State in Shaedon Meadors and he says he's talked with him about how things are with the Mountaineers.

So who stands out the most right now for Dawkins?

"NC State is."

Other schools in the mix include Louisville, Tennessee, Old Dominion, Wake Forest, Middle Tennessee, East Carolina, Massachusetts, and Georgia Southern.

After a stellar senior season with "64 catches for 1300+ yards and 16 touchdowns" Dawkins is hoping that his highlights will earn him additional offers down the stretch as we head towards National Signing Day.  That play earned him a selection to the prestigious Shrine Bowl next weekend and he talked about what he wants to do during the week of practice leading up to the game.

"I'm going ot make the most of it and enjoy everything!  I'm just going to have fun and work."

We'll continue to follow Dawkins' recruitment as we expect more schools to come rushing in late once his film starts to circulate.  He says he's open to anyone who wants to recruit him but it would appear that NC State may be out front at this time so stay tuned here on SCPrepNation.com for more with Dawkins.
