UNITED WE STAND

This photo was taken on September 14, 2001, the first Friday after the terrorist attacks, just prior to a Marlboro County High School (Bennettsville, SC) football game, as members of this small community struggled to regain some sense of normalcy in their lives. Like most Americans, I was also trying to come to grips with the horrific events of earlier that week, when I was struck by the reverence displayed by those in the stadium that night – particularly those of school age – during a hastily arranged tribute to America and the victims of the September 11 attacks.

Alll too often it seems that we, as a society, expect so little out of our young people, and, a cynic might add, are yet disappointed. But seeing the absolute respect for community, state, and nation that is so somberly displayed in the faces of these young men, native sons, like myself, of this rural area, as captured by this impromptu shot, reaffirmed my faith in the future of this great nation. Even now, when my gaze turns to this photo on my office wall, as it often does, it never ceases to affect me in some manner, sometimes generating a sadness deep within that threatens to overwhelm, but more often resulting in a sense of pride that literally fills my chest. Our fate lies in our children's hands, America. And, to me, this photo says it all: our future is bright.
