The Big 16 in 2006

As part of the SC Football History Page, I have been working on the enrollment numbers of the high schools going back over the past years. I made a chart showing the percentage of growth or decline and took the other variables into account such as new schools planned for the area and possible consolidation. With all those factors in place, here is what the Big 16 will/may look like in just 5 years time.

I made a chart showing the percentage of growth or decline and took the other variables into account such as new schools planned for the area and possible consolidation. With all those factors in place, here is what the Big 16 will/may look like in just 5 years time.

1 DORMAN

New school will insure triple digit growth for the next 10 years. The location of the school is in an area with little population so growth will occur in that area at an astounding rate. Could eventually reach 3500 to 4000.

2 SUMMERVILLE Stable for the past 15 years. Without a new school in the district the school will stay around 3000.
3 STRATFORD Slight growth but the area is maturing. The rate of growth will slow.
4 SUMTER Should be stable and experience slight growth as long as Shaw is operational.
5 LEXINGTON  Will continue to add students as the impact of White Knoll lessens and lessens
6 WANDO  Nothing but growth, now it is time to win
7 HILLCREST  The Golden Strip is still growing and looking to continue.
8 WEST ASHLEY  Another area ready for redevelopment and steady enrollments
9 FORT DORCHESTER  Could be the next powerhouse in SC football
10 DUTCH FORK  Everyone is moving across 1-26. New development in Irmo / Ballentine is in DF attendance area.
11 BOILING SPRINGS  Fastest growing school in the state. North Spartanburg exploding. BS could be Big 16 by 2004.
12 MAULDIN  The rest of the Golden Strip. Been on Woodruff Road recently ???
13 COLLETON COUNTY  The combined county school will show a stable enrollment for years to come.
14 SPARTANBURG Loss of 178 over the past 3 years. No new growth on the eastside of Spartanburg. New School at Dorman will further hurt school size as people choose between new state of the art school versus old 45 year facility
15 IRMO  Irmo finally ran out of room and caught up to  the lake. Neighborhoods around the school are growing old and there is little real estate around Irmo left to develop. School could drop out of Big 16 by decades end.
16 WHITE KNOLL With a full class and a growing area, this school should hit 2000 by decades end
Others schools in 4A outside the Big 16.
SPRING VALLEY  New school in Ballentine will keep the Richland 2 schools just outside of Big 16
NORTHWESTERN New city school in Rock Hill city drops NW and RH to just under 1700.
  GAFFNEY  Small community, dropping enrollment.
O'BURG-WILKINSON  5 year trend of dropping enrollment.
RIDGE VIEW  Ballentine High will take Ridge View kids, without the school RV tops over 2500
  RICHLAND NORTHEAST
  ROCK HILL
SOCASTEE  New South Strand High keeps Socastee at 1600
LOWER RICHLAND  Dying area of Columbia
  LAURENS  No growth in Laurens
LANCASTER  Consistent over the past 15 years at 1500 students
GOOSE CREEK  Older area, little chance of adding students.
GREENWOOD  Growing area and could eventually find themselves back to Big 16 after 18 year absence.
