Simulator City : The Playoffs

One nice by product of the Sim Season is a look at the 2002 version of the point system and how the changes will effect the parings, home games and brackets for the Big 16 and Division 2 teams

After playing with the Simulator Final Season standings and trying to make a little sense of the whole thing, I have come to the conclusion that the points will be even more of a mess than in previous seasons.

A few comments:

  • Only 8 of the 11 games will count this season, 3 games are mark offs.
  • Only 2 Big 16 games are allowed this season to count towards the points. Other Big 16 games are counted as D2 games.
  • With those rules it becomes obvious that we will have ties in the points this year since in essence an 8-3 record equals an 11-0 record with regard to points.
  • I did make one assumption, If a team played more than 2 Big 16 games then I counted a result as D2 result and did not mark the game off if there was a lower score game available to mark off.

That being said the most points a team can earn this year is 33.0 points.

Game 1  Beat a Big 16 w/ winning record     4.5

Game 2  Beat a Big 16 w/ winning record     4.5

Game 3   Beat  4A team                               4.0

Game 4   Beat  4A team                               4.0

Game 5   Beat  4A team                               4.0

Game 6   Beat  4A team                               4.0

Game 7   Beat  4A team                               4.0

Game 8   Beat  4A team                               4.0

Game 9   does not matter mark off                 x

Game 10   does not matter mark off               x

Game 11   does not matter mark off               x

Maximum Points Equals                              33.0

In the Pigskin Simulator, 4 teams got to 33.0 points but one of the teams was not Crestwood which was the only team to finish 11-0 but only plays 1 Big 16 team.

The four teams to finish with 33.0 were:

The mark offs make all teams equal with 33.0 with 2 wins over winning Big 16 teams.

But what makes the mess is 10 teams finished with 32.5 points or only .5 away from perfect. 14 of the 48 teams are only ½ point away from perfect. What a mess.

So here are the final point standings with points and total wins and losses.

Upper State                   Points   Total   Win    Loss

Dorman                        33.00   44.50   10        1

Northwestern               33.00   44.00   10        1

Spartanburg                  32.50   43.00   9          2

Rock Hill                      32.50   42.00   10        1

Lexington                     31.50   40.50   7          4

Gaffney                        30.50   41.00   6          5

Hillcrest                        30.00   39.00   5          6

Ridge View                  25.00   34.50   0          11

Lower State                  Points   Total   Win    Loss

Colleton County           32.50   43.00   9          2

Stratford                       32.50   43.00   9          2

Fort Dorchester            31.50   42.00   8          3

Sumter                        30.00   39.00   6          5

Summerville                  29.50   39.50   5          6

Irmo                            28.50   38.50   4          7

Wando                         26.50   36.50   2          9

West Ashley                 25.50   35.50   1          10

Not hard to argue with these standing particularly with the lower state following the wins and losses perfectly. Spartanburg gains a spot on Rock Hill with a harder schedule. Coach Ringer may regret the schedule come November.

Division 2  Final Standings

Upper State

Byrnes                          32.50   42.50   8          3

North Augusta              32.50   42.50   8          3

Aiken                           32.00   41.00   7          4

Fort Mill                       31.50   41.00   7          4

Spring Valley                31.50   42.00   7          4

South Aiken                 31.00   38.50   8          3

Greenwood                  30.50   38.00   8          3

Westside                      29.50   38.50   5          6

Division 2  Lower State

Berkeley                       33.00   43.50   9          2

Dutch Fork                   33.00   43.00   9          2

Crestwood                   32.50   44.50   11        0

Battery Creek               32.50   42.50   8          3

Conway                       32.50   42.50   9          2

Richland Northeast       31.00   41.00   7          4

Marlboro County          31.00   38.50   9          2

South Florence             30.00   39.00   6          5

Again not much to complain here. Crestwood is hurt by the lack of Big 16 games and actually starts the playoffs as a 3 seed. Socastee was the only team with a winning record to not make the playoffs.

I did not follow the SCHSL rules that have existed in D2 the past few years since the upper and lower state are now even with 4 regions in each.

South Florence at Byrnes

Spring Valley at Conway

Richland Northeast at Aiken

Greenwood at Dutch Fork

Westside at Berkeley

Battery Creek at Fort Mill

South Aiken at Crestwood

Marlboro County at North Augusta

There maybe a mistake or two here and if you find it then let me know so that I can watch for it during the season. All I can say is that it was easier to code the simulator program than it was to figure out these points. Visual Basic and C++ are cakewalks compared to the SCHSL.
