Surprise: Irmo Dumps Aiken 30-21

Carey Johnson's Aiken Green Hornets looked strong heading down the stretch in AAAA play but they had almost no answer for the rushing attack of the Irmo Yellow Jackets. Unbeaten no longer are the Green Hornets as they fell 30-21 Friday night for one of the major upsets this week.

It's not that complicated, or so it would seem of the Irmo Yellow Jackets offense. Irmo loves to run the football and that's just what they did Friday night against the Aiken Green Hornets. The Yellow Jackets pounded the ball against Aiken to the tune of 319 yards on the ground.

Irmo let the Green Hornets utilize the airways but stuck to their guns and came away with a mild upset in region play. In fact Irmo attempted just one pass to our recollection and it went for an interception so back to the ground game it went. Mario Carter lead the charge with 132 yards rushing while quarterback Leander Barney added 105 yards on the ground. Carter scored 3 touchdowns and Barney added another in the fourth quarter.

Aiken made a late comeback in the game but was turned back as the Yellow Jackets sacked Aiken QB Phillip Lee for a safety in the final minutes of action.

The loss leaves Aiken's record at (7-1) on the year while Irmo moves to (6-2). The race for the Region 4 AAAA title now becomes all the more interesting with the Yellow Jackets case looking stronger and stronger heading towards the playoffs.
