The Semi Finals --- Simulator 2002

Thanksgiving Friday and the Simulator send us our pick for the 2002 semifinals. Here is to hoping that the rains stay away and that we get a few of these classic match ups.

The Semi Finals of the 2002 Simulator Season has produces some classic match ups and a few surprises along the way. In Big 16, Dorman, Spartanburg, Rock Hill and Gaffney make it an all upper state contest while Byrnes, Greenwood, Berkeley and Marlboro County are battling on Thanksgiving Friday......lets just hope for no monsoons this year.

 The Big 16

Gaffney at Dorman

The first of 3 games played in Spartanburg County this evening.

For the second year in a row, 75% of the games are within a 10 mile radius.

Gaffney has come on strong the past few weeks and the team has had impressive wins in the playoffs on the road at Fort Dorchester and Stratford. Now sporting a 7-6 record, the Indians only travel 30 miles to Dorman for this encounter.

In the regular season, Dorman invaded the Reservation and beat the Indians by 11. This game is more of the same, the Dorman offense is now in full throttle and Gaffney does not have an answer for the offense.

Dorman scores the first three times they have the ball in the 1st quarter and rolls out to 21-0 lead. In the second Gaffney battles back with 2 TD but still trail 24-12 at the half. Dorman scores early in the 3rd quarter to take 31-12 lead and basically put the game out of reach.

The teams trade one final score each in the fourth quarter to give the Cavs a 38-19 victory and a return trip to Columbia for the 3rd time in 4 years.

Rock Hill at Spartanburg

Revenge game from 2001.  The Bearcats have had trouble with the Spartanburg teams over the past 5 years going only 2 -12 against Dorman and Spartanburg since 1998. The Cats see this as a game to erase past wrongs.

Unfortunately I simulated this entire game without viewing as it played out so all I have is the final score and not a narrative of the game.

The scores by quarters were:

Rock Hill        07    00    00   06      13

Spartanburg    00    03    00   07      10

Greenwood at Byrnes

Surprisingly both these teams have made it to the upper state finals with teams that lost a lot of talent from 2002. At the beginning of this season, both teams were expected to be in rebuilding or reloading modes.

The game starts fast with Byrnes scoring on the first play of the game with a 79 yard TD pass. Greenwood is stunned and has trouble on offense with a sack, penalty and a no gain. On the punt, Byrnes blocks the punt and after a scramble in the end zone, Greenwood recovers yielding a safety instead of a TD. After the free kick Byrnes starts possession at the 47 and 9 plays later another TD pass makes it 16-0 Byrnes.

Greenwood moves a little on the next possession but a turnover gives the ball back to Byrnes and the wheels have fallen off for the Eagles. Byrnes reins the offense in after a 14 play 61 yard drive that take 8:10, settles for a field goal to lead 19-7 at the half.

Greenwood takes the opening kick off back to the Rebel 29 and sets up a little mo for their first score to make 19-7 but the Rebels have a plan and answer the TD with a score of their own and take a 26-7 lead at the end of 3.

A desperate Eagle team is forced to pass on every down and is unable to keep a drive alive. A late TD is too little, too late and the Rebels win 26-14 and move onto Columbia for the championship match up.

Marlboro County at Berkeley

The Bull puppies from Marlboro County take off down Highway 17 for a low country battle with the Stags from Moncks Corner.

Early on both team exchange possession as both teams fill each other out and see what will work.

The Stags finally break through early in the 2nd by converting a Bulldogs interception into a 3 yard TD. A while later another Stag interception sets up the Stags for a FG and a 10-0 lead. MC gets on the board late before half with 71 yard TD pass. The second half sees the scoring open up a little.

Berkeley takes the opening Kickoff an
