WOW!!! That is about the only way to describe the performance of Marlboro County All American to be Syvelle Newton this past Friday at Clover. Although I do not have complete stats, he had to have had over 200 rushing and another 100 or so passing. Great performances were put in by the running corp of the Dogs as well.
I arrived around 6:30 pm with trusty partners Dave Pickren and Ralph Morris of Aiken County football fame. We immediately ran into several rabid dog fans including Bullhorn, Nawtydawg and a few others. After an hour or so of chewing the preverbial fat and, I a mighty tasty burger thanks to Bullhorn, we headed for the stands. Not many people, if anyone expected Clover to even come close to hanging with the dogs, but I have to tell you, those Eagles were there to play. They controlled the ball to the tune of nearly 17 minutes of the first 24. They scored 13 points on two long time consuming drives. All Marlboro Country did was run 11 offensive plays and put up 20 points in the first half. Never the less, my fellow SCPigskinprep partners and I were very impressed with the speed and agressiveness of the Eagle offensive unit. They were out sized by a long shot but the OL hung in there and gave the backs enough room to knock out 3 or 4 yards a play all the way down the field. First half ended with MC ahead 20-13.
When the second half started that is when the Syvelle Newton show started. Folks, this was the first time I had seen the young man play in person and film does not do him justice. This guy is a man among boys. He completly dominated the game. And what I was even more impressed with was the fact that he did not showboat, he did not publically boast about his feats. He acted like a professional, like he had been there before. You can bet he had been in that endzone many many times before and will be again many many more times at this and the next level.
Everyone that knows me knows I am a rabid Gamecock fan and all I could do was dream about him in a garnet and black uniform........I can only hope. Pull out the stops Lou, come get this guy.
Lastly, my apologies to all you faithfull visitors for this late writeup. I just returned from our annual Fantasy Football draft this weekend in Columbia and it is midnight as I write this up, but the fans of South Carolina High School football deserve it now, not tommorrow when I wake up , so here you go. Enjoy the season. It has officially arrived and with a more than an appropriate bang curtosy of Syvelle Newton. Thanks Cadillac, can' think of a better way to start it off....Til next time folks. MJ
