08' Hoops Update: Spartanburg's Omar Sanders

Spartanburg High's Omar Sanders has his sights set on making it big in college basketball. Inside he tells us about how his recruitment is unfolding early on, his early favorites, a closer look into his world, and a self analysis of what makes him one of the state's top hoops prospects in the class of 2008.

Omar Sanders is a man among boys, well at least during the regular season for the Spartanburg Vikings. The 6'7 Sanders towers over most of the competition and puts in work for Doug Lowe's team as his game continues to impress this recruiting analyst. Just 16 and rapidly developing into one of the state's top prospects in the class of 2008 SCPrepNation.com caught up with Sanders to see how things were going on the recruiting front.

We caught up with Omar spending time with teammate and fellow Viking standout Zycorrian Robinson (story on Robinson will be posted in the next day or two). The two form a terrific 1-2 punch for the Vikings and Omar is the man in the middle for Spartanburg High. Coming off a near triple-double just the other night Sanders told us about his best game in his career thus far. "My best game ever probably was against Gaffney earlier this year. I had 22 points, 17 rebounds, and 13 blocked shots. I think I could've had another triple double against Dorman but I got into early foul trouble and ended up with just 12 points, 10 rebounds, and a handful of blocked shots."

At 6'7 190 pounds Sanders may tower over local competition but his future unless he has another growth spurt may be as a face up small forward on the next level. Sanders is well aware of the fact and already has a nice perimeter game despite playing primarily in the post for the Vikings. Asked what made him such a hard matchup for opposing teams the junior replied, "Well I think my all-around game is my strength on the court." Apparently so as Sanders is bringing his lunch pail to the court every time out averaging 16 points, 10 rebounds, and almost 4 blocked shots per game so far. Still Sanders remains humble and knows there's more work to do when it comes to his basketball game. "I need to work on being more aggressive on the court and getting stronger."

Sanders has started to garner interest from a handful of schools but with another strong season under his belt and a strong showing on the AAU circuit you can expect his list of offers to grow. "Right now I'm the most interested in South Carolina, Ole Miss, and Winthrop. Things are going fine with my recruitment overall though. Georgia Tech and Ole Miss are probably recruiting me the hardest out of all the schools right now."

One of those school's could become his first scholarship offer and Sanders feels it could be sooner than later. "I think Winthrop could be close to offering."
