2009 Alert: Southside High SG Robbie Dreher

Young players usually aren't supposed to carry the load for strong basketball teams but Southside High School has a 2009 shooting guard who has loads and loads of potential. Come inside for an introduction to what may be one of the best players in the state for the class of 2009.

SCPrepNation.com traveled to Greenville Tuesday night and witnessed one of the most promising young basketball prospects in the state. Normally it's rare that you find a sophomore who's capable of making significant and more importantly consistent contributions on the high school level but Southside High School shooting guard Robbie Dreher obviously isn't just any ordinary sophomore. Playing for legendary coach Louie Golden Dreher appears to be a can't miss prospect in the class of 2009.

From a physical standpoint Dreher is long and lean which indicates his youth but when on the basketball court the word that came to mind the most about 2009 standout Dreher is smooth. We'd heard about Dreher before but his coming out party was during the FCA Christmas Tournament held at Greer High School recently. It was there that Dreher not only helped Southside High School win the tourney but the young soph also garnered the tournament MVP trophy as well.

Tuesday against Broome High School who is coming off a state championship in AA last season Dreher got off to a slow start but that all changed rather quickly. Broome hung tight throughout the first half and Southside only lead 22-20 at the half.

In the second half though a focused Southside team came out and pressured the Broome ballhandlers resulting in turnovers and easy buckets. Before long the two point lead surged to twenty before the fourth quarter started. Along the way Robbie Dreher seemed to have calmed down after a slow start in the opening half. Coach Louie Golden put the ball in his sophomore shooting guard's hands time and time again and the Broome defenders had no answer for Dreher. Blessed with a tremendous first step and solid ballhandling abilities Dreher kept driving to the bucket where he would draw fouls or finished with creative layups with some of those resulting in three points plays. Dreher's perimeter game wasn't "on" per say but when it is he's a beast to try and contain for opposing defenses. It's a pick your poison situation with Dreher because he's normally a strong perimeter shooter, he also finishes extremely well when attacking the basket, shoots a high percentage from the charity stripe if you foul him, and will not hesitate to find an open teammate for easy buckets. Dreher's penetration opened up easy looks for the Tigers' shooters and his teammates started to knock down shots with consistency as the rout ensued.

The Southside Tigers have jumped out to an impressive 19-1 start to this point and you can expect them to keep rolling towards the playoffs thanks to the guidance of legendary coach Louie Golden, a nice mix of athletes, strong perimeter shooters, solid ballhandlers, and the play of 09' prospect Robbie Dreher.

Coach Louie Golden has said this about his standout sophmore, "Robbie Dreher? He can do it all." Coming from a man who's been in the coaching game for years and years and has coached a number of D1 players already it's a real compliment. Now we'll see how much more Dreher continues to blow up as his career continues on.

SCPrepNation.com will have more on Robbie Dreher and other top flight basketball prospects and teams throughout South Carolina as the season continues...stay tuned.
