Rice, at 5'11 172 pounds, last year covered opposing team's top receivers and for good reason as he is their top coverage corner. Despite sitting out 4 games with an ankle injury Rice put up some solid stats for the Rebels. "Last year I had 40 tackles, 3 interceptions, 1 fumble recovery, and 7 pass breakups even though I missed those games," Rice told us.
That ankle injury was fairly serious and we asked the 2008 standout what his current status was with the injured ankle. "I'm 100% again. I missed those four games because of it but I'm ready to go now."
Rice shared with us what he felt were his strengths and what areas he wanted to key on this offseason heading into his senior season. "I'd have to say my strengths are that I have a good knowledge of the game, that I'm an aggressive corner, and I have very good closing speed. The thing I think I need the most work on is jamming receivers at the line."
Being at Byrnes Rice is put through one of the toughest workout regimens in the country through their strength and conditioning program. His work in the weight room has shown recently.
"I competed in the SC state strength competition. I placed 3rd overall in the state in the 170 pound class. My fastest time in the 40 is 4.5 seconds."
Offers have yet to come for Rice but the list of schools currently recruiting him is extremely impressive. "Right now I'm hearing from Louisville, Georgia, Marshall, Auburn, Michigan State, Kentucky, Maryland, East Carolina, and LSU. Out of those schools I'd have to say Louisville, Marshall, Auburn, Michigan State, and Georgia are recruiting me the hardest."
This past offseason saw coach Bobby Bentley leave the Byrnes program to coach at his alma mater, Presbyterian College. The new head coach though is a familiar face in former defensive coordinator Chris Miller. With a new head coach we asked Rice if things would be different for Byrnes. "No it's still the same to us. Coach Miller is family to us so there's nothing major that will change. Everything is still the same."
Rice says that he's currently wide open to any schools that are recruiting him with no favorites whatsoever. He also told us that he'll probably wait until the very end (Signing Day) to make a college decision as well.
