Marlboro Co. vs. Northwestern Review
Even though much talk is reflecting off the fight after the game, there was actually a game played, in which the Trojans defeated the Bulldogs 14-10. Click on the headline for more including stats and an exclusive update on Syvelle Newton.
Northwestern (2-1) shut down Marlboro County's rushing game, limiting the Bulldogs to 23 yards on 22 carries, but the Trojans couldn't completely take the passing game away from Newton.
Newton completed 18 of 28 passes for 212 yards. He was intercepted twice by C.J. Barber and had a pass batted down at the 5 by Omar Craig.
With 2:29 left in the first half, Newton led the Bulldogs on a 95-yard, 10-play drive that ended when he threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Rod Broady that tied the score at 7 with 14 seconds left in the half. Ninety-three of the yards came on Newton passes.
Northwestern's first-quarter scoring drive was just as impressive. The Trojans drove 98 yards -- 82 coming on the ground -- on a 15-play drive that lasted seven minutes and 33 seconds to take a 7-0 lead.
The final yard was a 1-yard touchdown plunge by Trojans' fullback Jonathan Williams.
Northwestern scored the winning touchdown on its opening possession of the second half. The key play was a 41-yard pass from Trojans' quarterback Bobo Thompson to Carlin Long that put Northwestern at Marlboro County's 27.
Three plays later, Thompson tossed a 13-yard touchdown pass to tight end Barrett Maners.
On the ensuing possession, Marlboro County (2-2) punted, but got the ball back when the ball bounced off a Northwestern player and was recovered by the Bulldogs.
Newton was forced to punt again after the Bulldogs stalled, but Barber fumbled on the return, and the Bulldogs recovered at the Trojans' 41. Marlboro County drove to the 9, but had to settle for Kevin Miller's 26-yard field goal.
Syvelle Newton told MarlboroCountyBulldogs.com this morning that he will be visiting the doctor this morning and he may have broken ribs, but that is yet confirmed. According to the Rock Hill Herald, Coach Boyd stated that Newton told him he was surrounded by Trojans and that while one Northwestern player held him, another hit him with a helmet and then he was punched. I will attempt to contact Syvelle Newton later today or tomorrow to confirm what the doctor said.
