Week 4 - - Big C Predicts the Class 4A Games

Big C returns for the 4th week of the 2002 season.

After a disasterous Week 2, Big C rebounded quite nicely in Week 3, posting a much more Big C-like 78.4% (24 right and 7 wrong). I hope to get over 80% this week, but there are a few rather tough games that are going to make it very challenging for me to reach that kind of accuracy. But I have to try, so here we go:

DANIEL AT EASLEY: I'm sure that this has gotten old for Green Wave faithful, but I suspect that Easley has yet another long Friday night ahead of them. The Lions are coming off being upset by Westside, and they will take out some frustrations on Easley... Daniel 35, Easley 6.

SPARTANBURG AT GREENWOOD: The Vikings broke out of their 2-game losing streak in style by blowing out Richland Northeast on the road. The Eagles are struggling some right now,and Spartanburg should be able to send them to a third straight defeat and continue to recover from that 0-2 start... Spartanburg 21, Greenwood 7.

LAURENS AT HILLCREST: The Rams are about to discover just how much improved of a football team the Laurens Raiders have this year... Laurens 30, Hillcrest 10.

BOILING SPRING AT MAULDIN: Trycoachtry isn't going to like this, but I think the Bulldogs are going to be defeated again. The Mavericks are much improved despite their poor result vs. Byrnes, and they are eager to bounce back and prove it... Mauldin 27, Boiling Springs 13.

FORT MILL AT T.L. HANNA: This is a battle of Yellow Jackets. Fort Mill was supossed to be improved this year, but I have not seen it yet. But I have seen that T.L. Hanna is improved and is putting up some big offensive numbers. And it's a long way from Fort Mill to Anderson. Hanna continues to impress as they go to 4-0... T.L.Hanna 35, Fort Mill 20.

DORMAN AT WESTSIDE: The Rams surprised Daniel (and me) last week, so the Cavaliers better not take Westside lightly and they better get off that bus ready to play football. I think David Gutshall will have his team ready, and Lynch and company will prove too much for the Rams... Dorman 35, Westside 14.

BYRNES AT EVANGEL CHRISTIAN, LA: The Rebels have several things going against them in this contest. First, a long 12-hour bus trip for a game in front of a whole lot of hostile fans. Second, the Eagles are coming off a loss, and national powers don't usually lose two in a row. Evangel will be extremely hungry to win this one. Third, Evangel can in effect ask great players to come play for them, and Byrnes can't do that. But despite all that, I think Byrnes is good enough to represent SC well and make a good football game out of this contest. Ultimately, though, I feel that Evangel and their advantages will just be too much for the Rebels to overcome... Evangel 31, Byrnes 21.

GAFFNEY AT UNION: A win at Union in this old rivalry, and Gaffney will put Region 2 and the rest of the state on notice that they are on their way back. The Indians will come close, but the Yellow Jackets will prove a bit too tough at home... Union 20, Gaffney 17.

LANCASTER AT HARTSVILLE: The Bruins have a very respectable football team. The Red Foxes have shown quite a bit of improvement over the past few seasons. This should be a good football game, but I don't think Hartsville has improved quite enough to win it. Of course, I think a lot of things... Lancaster 24, Hartsville 13.

NORTHWESTERN AT EAST MECKLENBURG, NC: According to NC Preps, East Meck is 3-0 and ranked #12 in NC 4A. But I remember them losing to a very mediocre Hartsville squad last year evn though they advanced to the state semifinals in NC, so I have to go with the Trojans in this one. The Northwestern defense will deliver the victory... Northwestern 14, East Mecklenburg 7.

IRMO AT RIDGE VIEW: The Yellow Jacket defense packs quite a bit of sting, and Ridge View is the next in line to feel it. Irmo shouldn't have a lot of trouble improving to 4-0... Irmo 21, Ridge View 7.

YORK AT ROCK HILL: The Cougars are very tough. They beat a solid Lancaster team last week and I think they are quite capable of upsetting the Bearcats. Stingy defense wins a lot of games, though, and Rock Hill escapes... Rock Hill 14, York 10.

SPRING VALLEY AT SOUTH FLORENCE: Sorry, Victoria. The Bruins have a good team and a very capable defense, but I just have a feeling that their 3 game winning streak is about to be snapped by the Vikings. Some may call it a mild upset, but I think the Vikings have the tools to go into Florence and win this one... Spring Valley 20, South Florence 12.

AIRPORT AT LEXINGTON: It could be a very big night for Demetrius Summers and company as they take on an outmanned opponent... Lexington 42, Airport 10.

NORTH AUGUSTA AT LOWER RICHLAND: Playing the Diamonds will give the Yellow Jackets a nice opportunity to blow off some steam from their loss to Gaffney and get themselves back on the right track... North Augusta 42, Lower Richland 0.

ORANGEBURG-WILKINSON AT ALLENDALE-FAIRFAX: The Bruins travel to take on yet another 2A opponent. Allendale-Fairfax is not a pushover and they will be tougher than Calhoun County, but O-W has should still be able to prevail without many problems if they want to because they have more depth and more talent than A-F... O-W 30, A-F 14.

STROM THURMOND AT SOUTH AIKEN: The Thoroughbreds should be able to go to 4-0 for the first time ever, though it's by no means a guarantee. And South Aiken better enjoy this while it lasts, because their schedule is about to become a good deal tougher starting in Week 5... South Aiken 24, Strom Thurmond 14.

WHITE KNOLL AT DUTCH FORK: White Knoll is better than I thought they were, so this game strikes me as a difficult one. The strength of Dutch Fork so far has been their defense, and I think that the Silver Foxes will be a ble to pull out a win by riding that D... Dutch Fork 13, White Knoll 6.

RICHLAND NORTHEAST AT CRESTWOOD: Another tough game here. The Knights pull it out at home... Crestwood 20, Richland NE 17.

LAKEWOOD AT SUMTER: The 3A Gators have scored 110 points in their last two games, and the Gamecocks have to be mindful of that. But that was against opponents who are nowhere near the caliber of Sumter, a team that has to be brought up in Big 16 title discussions. The Gamecocks should win quite convincingly over their county rival... Sumter 31, Lakewood 6.

CONWAY AT MARION: The Swamp Foxes are a pontentially dangerous opponent for a Tiger team stinging from a close loss to Sumter last week. But I think Conway will regroup and come away with a good road win... Conway 24, Marion 7.

WILSON AT MARLBORO COUNTY: The 3A Tigers are a good team and are capable of sending the Bulldogs to an unthinkable third stright loss. But as long as Marlboro County can put the debacle that was the Northwestern game behind them, they should be able to get back on the winning track... Marlboro County 28, Wilson 14.

SOCASTEE AT NORTH MYRTLE BEACH: Who knows and who cares? Just kidding, y'all, just kidding. Flip a coin, because I feel that this one will be a barnburner that could go either way... North Myrtle Beach 21, Socastee 17.

BERKELEY AT BEAUFORT: The Stags should have no problem defeating the Eagles, as Beaufort has really struggled... Berkeley 41, Beaufort 6.

GOOSE CREEK AT COLLETON COUNTY: As long as the Cougars can put Stratford in the proverbial rear-view mirror, they should be able to come back this week against the Gators and go to 3-1... Colleton County 24, Goose Creek 16.

HILTON HEAD AT JAMES ISLAND: The Trojans have proven inconsistent in the past, so I never know quite what to expect from them. The Seahawks are riding a two-game win streak, but I think James Island has more talent than them and should end it... James Island 21, Hilton Head 10.

STRATFORD AT BATTERY CREEK: The Dolphins got a nice shoutout win over West Ashley last week, but this is a different week as the run into the buzzsaw that is the Stratford Knights... Stratford 35, Battery Creek 13.

WANDO AT FORT DORCHESTER: This is another one that could potentially go either way, but I have to lean toward the homestanding Patriots. I see it being a great game and a second straight heartbreaking defeat for the Warriors... Fort Dorchester 22, Wando 21.

SUMMERVILLE AT WEST ASHLEY: The Wildcats played well the first two weeks, but I lost a lot of confidence in West Ashley last week when they were shut out by a Battery Crrek team that before had been unimpressive. Summerville looks like a very solid team, and the Green Wave should make it 3-1... Summerville 34, West Ashley 14.

That's this week's predictions. I hope everyone enjoys the games and has fun whether their team is victorious or not. And don't take it as a shot against your team if I put them on the losing end of a game... I just call 'em as I see 'em! Play hard everyone and ENJOY THIS GREAT GAME!!
