SCPrepNation.com caught up with Derrick to find out the scoop in regards to his recruitment currently. Having just competed in USC's 7 on 7's this Saturday Derrick took little time in hitting the road once again. "Right now I'm camping at Miami. Later on this week I'll be up at South Carolina for camp." We asked Derrick how he felt his Conway squad fared in Columbia this past Saturday and he replied, "We played four games and went 3-1. We lost to Wilson, we were on a scoring drive with one minute to go and the coach called a timeout and time ran out. I didn't like how it ended but that's how it goes."
Spring practice also concluded recently for Conway and Derrick is optimistic about next year's team. "Spring practice went good, we got in all the stuff we wanted to get in and nobody got hurt. We're going to be a young team this year but with the people we have we're going to get better. We don't have any bad attitudes on the team. We're team oriented and that makes things so much easier."
In our last update with the Conway star a busy slate of visits and camps were on the agenda. "Yeah we had a lot lined up before. We changed a little bit and are playing it by ear right now. We're looking at who has commits and who doesn't. For right now this is what I know is up, I'm at Miami right now, South Carolina later on this week, and NC State next week. Past that I'm not really sure. I haven't finalized things yet as far as trips go though."
Dakota recently made it up to Charlotte, North Carolina and competed in the Scout.com All-American Combine Tour at Panthers Stadium. In terms of testing Derrick absolutely tore it up running 4.67 seconds in the 40, posted a vertical of 33.1 inches, and 4.47 seconds in the 20 yard shuttle. It was a bright day for Derrick on the testing stage but a horrible thunderstorm arose right before one on one drills could get under way. "Yeah I thought I had a strong showing up there but we didn't get to throw during drills because of that storm that came through. I was real happy with my testing results though."
After posting strong numbers in Charlotte things haven't changed much on the recruiting front of Derrick. "I have an offer from Newberry College. As far as D1 schools go though there are not really any new ones. North Carolina State is recruiting me the hardest out of the D1 schools right now though."
When asked about camping in Coral Gables with the Hurricanes he replied, "They (Miami) aren't recruiting me but it's a place that I wanted to go. They are recruiting players very similar to my style so I figured I'd come down and have some fun at least and maybe stir up more interest."
It's still too early in the recruiting process to pencil in a timeframe for a decision for the Conway star. "Right now I really don't have any favorites. I'm looking for offers right now. We are looking at who's got commitments and who doesn't."
Having passed for over 2,400+ yards last year, completing 179 of 279 passes (64% completion rate), and 22 touchdowns the Conway star has clearly improved his physical abilities which quite possibly could mean another outstanding season next year. For now Derrick is working hard to try and show college coaches that he indeed is worthy of those scholarship offers. At 6'4 185 pounds given his frame and athleticism college coaches will have to take a closer look at Derrick after putting up such strong numbers at the Scout.com combine.
SCPrepNation.com will have more updates on Dakota Derrick as the summer camp circuit begins and we head towards next season so stay tuned.
