We first spoke with Calvin's father, Calvin Greene Jr., about his son's early career. "I graduated from Porter-Gaud back in the 1970's, and I kind of wanted Calvin to be a Porter-Gaud alumnus as well, but he seems to really feel at home at Burke. I was actually looking at a boarding school up in Asheville called Christ School in the spring of 2006, and they do have a pretty good football program. They wanted to see at least one semester of good grades from Burke before they would accept him because his grades at West Ashley in the 2005-06 school year were not very good. I think a lot of this had to do with some of the kids that he was hanging out with at West Ashley, as well as his own failure to apply himself. After turning his grades around in the Fall semester at Burke, he seemed to like it so much that we ruled out going to Christ School (the boarding school)."
Now settled in at Burke High Greene Jr. talked about it a little, "Coach Rose at Burke is an excellent young coach, and I believe that he and his staff will get the best out of Calvin."
After speaking with his father we hit Calvin III up with a number of questions in which he quickly answered for us. Asked if he'd already visited any college campuses the Burke center said, "I've been to Charleston Southern and Clemson. Clemson was okay, but not exactly what I had in mind, and I liked Charleston Southern."
He also told us about one of his most memorable games as well. "I'd have to say it was when I was playing for West Ashley High School and the game was tied 7 all in the fourth against Goose Creek. I forced a fumble and recovered it. We then scored a touchdown and won the game." He also recalled his toughest one on one assigment. "I'm not sure what his name was, but he was about 6'6 and he was a senior at Summerville. At that time I was just a sophomore but he was the toughest player I've faced."
The goal this year is to help his team win as many football games as possible but also try to generate enough interest from colleges to earn some scholarship offers. There will be three important factors according to Greene when making his college decision, "Location, students, and prestige."
