Brookland Cayce Wins in a Defensive Struggle

The Cats win a big game over the Capitols as Brookland Cayce heads to Region play.

CAYCE, SC -- Senior quarterback Robert Wells scored from 13 yards out with 2:31 remaining in the game as host Brookland-Cayce snapped a three-game losing streak to down Columbia 10-6 at The Cage on Homecoming.

Played in extremely humid (79%) and hot (83 degrees) conditions that included several stints of rain, the Bearcats jumped on top early in the second quarter as junior placekicker Kyle James connected on a 28-yard field goal that capped off a 64-yard drive by B-C that consumed 8:20 of the clock and consisted of 14 plays.

But, Columbia took the lead at the 7:52 mark on a strange play that occurred on a fourth-and-one at the Brookland-Cayce 46-yard line. As senior quarterback Chris Hudgens began the option play to the left end, the ball was fumbled, but picked up by fellow classmate Ivory Haltiwanger, who broke a pair of tackles behind the line of scrimmage and raced 46 yards to the end zone. The extra point attempt was blocked and the Capitals held a 6-3 advantage at intermission.

Neither team could muster any points in the third quarter and the B-C heroics by Wells wrapped up a huge come-from-behind victory for Coach Brad Coleman's Bearcats as B-C has fallen in two games this year by a total of eight points -- Gilbert (20-19 OT) and Swansea (14-7). A key play in the game-winning drive was senior Rorey Garnett's eight-yard ramble on a fourth-and-three at the Columbia 34-yard line that kept the drive alive. For the game, Garnett rushed six times for 44 yards (7.3 average) to lead the B-C rushing attack.

The win was Brookland-Cayce's third consecutive Homecoming victory as B-C downed North HS the past two years (38-0 last year and 20-14 in 2000). The 2001 Homecoming Queen, Joycelyn McElveen, crowned Kim Vinson as this year's recipient and her court was made up of Second Runner-Up Kelsi Dunlap and First Runner-Up Hollie Griffin.

The win improves B-C to 2-3 overall and the Bearcats will begin Region 5-3A play next Friday at The Cage as they entertain Midland Valley (1-4). The loss drops the Capitals to 3-2 as Columbia will begin Region 5-2A action at Chesterfield (1-3) next Friday.
