We caught up with Washington to talk about how things have been going for him on the recruiting front and preparations for this upcoming season.
Despite the sweltering heat Washington remains upbeat about his team's prospects for this upcoming season. He shared with us how practice has been going for the Cavaliers. "It's been wonderful. The coaches have been hard on us. We're just basically trying to run to the ball and have everybody do that. Trying to get everybody on the same page."
He also likes his defensive unit's look early on as well. "Right now it's looking like we're about 95% as a good defense…real close to 110% all the way but we've got to come together a bit more and put it in our heads that we're working towards a state championship and #1 in the state as a defense."
The Cavaliers already have one scrimmage under their belts and Washington talked about the battle against Chesterfield High. "Chesterfield is a 2A school but they really had some great athletes. Their running back Simpson Miller is one of the top backs in the state this year. They had a couple of guys playing both ways because they're not a big team. They did what they had to do putting up a good fight but we ended up coming out on top and winning. I believe the final score was 7-6."
Next on the Cavaliers' scrimmage agenda is A.C. Flora High School. Washington chimed in about playing them as well. "I expect it to be a real good game. Kenneth Page is one of the top offensive linemen in the nation not just South Carolina plus there's another guy that's playing beside him that's really good too. Coach Herb who was our receivers coach last year is their offensive coordinator now so it's going to be fun and intense playing against him. I am really looking forward to seeing what Kenneth Page has. I want to show people I'm one of the best defensive players in the state this year if not #1."
As far as his recruitment goes it sounds as if Washington will be spending a lot of time opening mail very soon. "It's been going pretty good, about the same schools. I haven't received a lot of my letters because a lot of them have apparently been going to my position coach at RNE but I have a few boxes I've been told."
His list of schools hasn't changed much but one program has jumped back in a big way. "I'd have to say Tennessee, Vanderbilt, South Carolina, Colorado, Virginia Tech, Clemson, and Virginia are the main schools. Tennessee and Vanderbilt really stand out to me. I really can't put my finger on why but they do to me."
South Carolina has made their way into things due to a strong and growing relationship with defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix. Washington explained to us why he's once again highly interested in the Gamecocks he grew up dreaming of playing for. "I thought long and hard about it and they needed to be back on my list. Personally because of coach Tyrone Nix and Steve Spurrier. They're great coaches and I see myself fitting into their system."
He also talked about his relationship with Nix. "Me and him have been talking on the phone and on the field. He'll pull me to the side and talk to me and let me know that it wasn't any changes in them looking at me. They definitely still want to recruit me and he'd love to have me and coach me up. He tells me to go out there and put it all on the line since it's my senior year. He gave me a line about it too. He said that even if my mom was out there on the field that I have such a mean streak that I'd want to hit her too. He wants me to come out to their practices and looks forward to seeing more of me."
The RNE star has been eating at a rapid pace lately to try and add weight to his frame and apparently it's working as he now reports that he's up to 197 pounds and maintaining his 4.6 speed. The goal is to continue to add more weight and lower his time in the 40.
"I'll be starting next week working every Saturday with Josh Ortega who's a great trainer and has helped a lot of guys lower their 40 times."
While a lot of those aforementioned schools are recruiting him as a linebacker some still envision him at the safety position. Regardless Washington intends on laying the wood to opposing teams this year to lay the groundwork for his first scholarship offer. That first offer will mean the world to the RNE star and could pay dividends in the long run being his first offer.
SCPrepNation.com will have more updates on Chaz Washington as the regular season quickly approaches so keep it locked right here.
Note: Washington and the RNE staff will give us an update on how the scrimmage against A.C. Flora goes on Tuesday night at 6:00 PM so stay tuned for all the lastest.
