South Carolina commit Jay Spearman was up to his usual bag of tricks during Week 1 of the season. In a hometown battle between Greenwood and Emerald Spearman lead the way for the Eagles in a hard fought 14-9 victory. Come inside for all the details.

The Greenwood Eagles aren't the defending AAAA Division 2 state champions for nothing. During Week 1 of the season they battled in town foes Emerald High and this one actually turned out to be a much better game than many anticipated.

Teams facing the Greenwood Eagles know they need to keep a close eye on QB Jay Spearman as he's able to beat you through the air and on the ground. Friday night saw Spearman help lead the Eagles to a tough victory over Emerald High School 14-9.

The South Carolina commit was a little shaky throwing the ball going 8-16 for 111 yards and 2 interceptions but his feet helped the Eagles keep the ball moving when things bogged down. Spearman had 20 carries for 122 yards and 1 touchdown. With some help from D.J. Swearinger who also passed the century mark rushing for 101 yards on 18 carries the Eagles were able to hold off a pesky Emerald squad.

Fumbles plagued the Greenwood offense as they fumbled six times losing the ball four times. Expect a tough week for Spearman and crew during practices to correct their turnover problems as they try to defend their state championship crown. Stay tuned to SCPrepNation.com for more.
