Stephon Gilmore: Highly Coveted 09' Playmaker

With almost 2 years left in his HS career South Pointe S/QB Stephon Gilmore has a who's who list of schools recruiting him. An elite athlete Gilmore will rise quickly as one of the most wanted players in the southeast in the 2009 class. Come inside with to see just where his recruitment stands and his outlook for the rest of his junior season.

There are plenty of outstanding athletes in the Palmetto State on the gridiron. Year after year South Carolina has some of the top recruits in the nation. The 2009 class will be no different but early on one player has emerged as possibly the "most electric" out of the bunch. South Pointe S/QB Stephon Gilmore is a walking highlight tape. Blessed with good size (6'2 185 pounds) and athleticism that is already wowing some of the nation's top college coaches Gilmore should be one of the top prospects in the 2009 class. We caught up recently with the South Pointe star to discuss his current season, near future, and recruitment.

This past Monday Gilmore took an unoffical visit to Clemson to watch the Tigers battle Florida State. Gilmore had this to say about his trip before he left. "I'm going to Clemson tonight, I'm gonna see how their game atmosphere is up there and how they play. I want to see how their DB's play."

The Tigers have made Gilmore a priority in their 2009 recruiting class but so have many other top flight programs. Gilmore's list is impressive and it's still early in the recruiting process for the South Pointe junior. "I'm hearing from a lot of schools. Florida, Florida State, Clemson, South Carolina, Auburn, Tennessee, and Ohio State."

Before long expect Gilmore to have offers from some of those programs and plenty of others as he and his father informed us that most of them have already talked about offering the South Pointe star in the near future. We talked with Gilmore about how he projects to be one of the top players in the class of 2009 and he responded, "It's good, it's also motivation for me to work harder to be the best."

Gilmore's goals for this season are clear and obvious. "I want to lead my team to the state title." So far he's done his part leading South Pointe to an early 2-0 record. Gilmore has 3 rushing touchdowns in those games with 180 yards coming in his first game. In his second game he rushed for 90 yards. On the defensive side Gilmore has already forced 2 fumbles on the season.

Stephon talked about his abilities with us and why he's such a talented player. "I can make defenders miss when I have the ball and I'm a good tackler/hitter on defense." The hungry 2009 player isn't satisfied with his game though as he says that he'll continue to work to improve each and every day. "One thing I want to work on is my speed, getting it down even lower." Keep in mind that Gilmore already runs a 4.43 in the 40 yard dash.

When taking a hard look at college programs there is one key factor at this point in time that will be important to Gilmore. "I just want to go to a school that help me improve the most to put me on to the next level and make me better overall."
