Mike Davis: Greenville High 2009 DE Prospect

Greenville DE Mike Davis could be the next D1 prospect out of the Red Raiders football program. After helping Greenville knock off Gaffney a few weeks ago Davis has emerged as a player to be reckoned with. Come inside to learn more about him with SCPrepNation.com.

We were in the house during Greenville's victory over Gaffney a few weeks ago. While DT Arterio Arnold is a highly recruited player in the 2008 class we heard the name of 2009 DE Mike Davis called just as many times. Emerging from Arnold's shadow Davis could end up being just as good as his senior teammate by this time next season. SCPrepNation.com caught up with Davis for an update on his season and recruitment.

After defeating then #1 ranked Gaffney we couldn't help but ask the 2009 prospect about how it felt to defeat the state's very best. Davis said, "I don't think it hit me that big when the 4th quarter ended, but it felt real good on Saturday morning picking up the paper seeing we made some history. They are a very good team but I think they didn't take us that serious but we showed up to play and we won. It was a good defensive game between both of us but our offense just made more big plays I think. It was something we looked forward to since last year when they beat us by 3 points at their place."

Although it was a great performance by Davis and his teammates he had this to say, "It was one of my best games but not my best game. My best game came last year in Daniel as an sophomore. I ended up with 15 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, and 3 pressures."

Last week though the Red Raiders came up on the losing end against Rock Hill 54-19. He shared his thoughts about the loss. "I think we came out just a little too flat since we had just beat Gaffney. We were winning the game at the half 12-7. Right before halftime I came up with a big safety that gave us some momentum. But they came out ready to play the second half and they started to get big turnovers in our red-zone. We held them pretty good but their defense made more big plays than we did. In the 4th quarter everything just went wrong and we had too many big turnovers."

After their first loss of the season you'd expect a tough week of practice but apparently things have been somewhat normal in the Red Raiders camp as they prepare for Pickens on Friday night. "Practice has been normal this week. We key on recognizing the formations Pickens run and what to expect when they set up in certain formations. We are still working on good technique on both sides of the ball. We are trying to get everything perfect so we can get a shutout on defense, and start the conference games off the right way."

A few games left on the schedule will be extra special for Davis as he told us, "I am looking forward to the Berea game because those guys talk the most trash. Plus those are the guys who stay in your neighborhood and the game will be packed with your friends. Another game is BHP because as of now they are still our region champs."

Davis has seen some tough competitors in his career thus far and he talked about some of the most memorable ones with us. "Wilson Norris from Pickens, he was so big and strong. He came off the ball low and hard all night long. David Smith from Greenville he was so big with such quick feet. I loved to go against him in drills we did at practice just to challenge myself. (Norris and Smith are now teammates at Clemson) Lee Kiser from Greenville he was just a beast on the line run and pass blocking. He was the first person to ever pancake me when I played scout team in 9th grade. I saw him this summer and we both laughed about it when I told him that."

One school has already noticed the Greenville High defensive standout apparently. The South Carolina Gamecocks have started to actively recruit Davis. Davis however is looking to add plenty more schools to that list. "This is my list of schools that I'd like to hear from. Georgia, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Michigan, North Carolina, Maryland, North Carolina State, South Carolina, and Louisville." He also has an idea as to what he's looking for in a college as well. "Location, education opportunities, football program, and the coaches will be the most important factors for me."

Davis is solid standout in the classroom as well boasting a 3.1 GPA. SCPrepNation.com will have more updates on Mike Davis as the season rolls on so keep it locked right here.
