The Byrnes Rebels have gotten off to a 6-0 record and they've battled Dr. Phillips out of Florida and traveled to Ohio to take on Centerville High. They've also beaten Dorman High which was ranked #2 in AAAA at the time. Each time the #1 ranked Rebels found a way to come away with a victory. Still many are thinking about their matchup with Gaffney as the big test for the Rebels. With Gaffney defeating Byrnes twice last season ending their attempt at 5 consecutive state championships. Dawkins talked about the approach the Rebels are taking this season. "Well of course you have to take every game as it comes but the Gaffney game is still in the back of our minds. When the time comes I believe that we will be ready for it." That would mean this week's opponent, Hillcrest High, is the main emphasis for the Rebels at this moment in time.
With the Rebels facing so many tough teams this season he said one squad presented the biggest. "Hands down I would have to say the team from Ohio, Centerville, they had a lot of talent on their team."
With so much attention from opposing teams it could be frustrating for Dawkins but the standout continues to make plays despite the constant barrage of double and triple teams. "Right now through 6 games I have 70 tackles, 4 sacks, 11 tackles for loss, 18 QB hurries, and that's with most teams trying to avoid me still." There's no denying his ability to seek out the ballcarrier or quarterback and that's just one of the reasons why Dawkins has been so heavily recruited.
He talked with us about his current status on the recruiting front as well. "I don't have any new offers but there's still a lot of big schools that are showing interest. My top 5 right now would be Florida State, Tennessee, North Carolina State, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest."
Many schools want Dawkins to come make visits but he said that he's been busy trying to help his team get back to state championship form and when Saturday rolls around he's worn out.
Dawkins did say he is making plans to make a trip to Florida State when they take on the Miami Hurricanes. He's also trying to make it to the South Carolina-Tennessee game as well.
Rumors persist about which way Dawkins is leaning but he told us, "Right now it's up in the air with me, I'm not really sure when I'll make a commitment."
