Hillcrest SF Stedman Short Commits!

Hillcrest High had Stedman Short as the primary force in their arsenal last season. The 2008 prospect became a favorite of some college staffs in the region and quickly gathered some offers. The Hillcrest star decided to end the process and the lucky program who received his commitment was....?

One of the strongest recruiting battles in southern part of the country ended this week. Stedman Short, a 6-foot-8 small forward out of Simpsonville (S.C.) Hillcrest picked High Point after visiting Winthrop, Furman and Loyola.

"It was security," Short's traveling coach Lamont Simmons of the Carolina Raptors said. "Knowing that they have a real good program and they're on the rise. With what they have coming in and what's going out that was a factor. We liked their facilities but most of all it was the coaching staff. They never wavered from the first day."

Simmons, a region player of the year as a junior, made the transition from inside to the wing in the last season. Simmons felt like with more development his guy could have been an even higher level prospect.

"I actually think Stedman was under recruited. I think he could have been a high DI player and his potential is unlimited. He can play the wing and shoots the 3.

"If he were about 30 more pounds and ball handling was where it needed to be he would have been a high DI kid. His potential is endless. He'll be a darn good player."
