Big C Predicts - - - Week 7

Last week produced a somewhat disappointing 18-6 record. There were a few upsets and a couple of close games between even teams that just did not go my way. This week, we finally get into region play, and the season will really start to get interesting. Let's get to the games.

EASLEY AT MAULDIN: The Mavericks should be able to open region play with a victory over a punchless Green Wave team... Maudin 35, Easley 7.

T.L. HANNA AT GREENWOOD: This game may very well decide the Region 1 champ. Hanna is undefeated, but still relatively untested. The Eagles are 2-4, but those four losses are to four of the state's top teams, so few teams are as tested as Greenwood. I still think the Eagles are the team to beat in Region 1 just like they have been the past few years, at least until someone else in the region proves otherwise. It should be a good game, but Greenwood comes out on top... Greenwood 28, Hanna 21.

HILLCREST AT WESTSIDE: In this battle of Rams, both teams see this as an excellent chance to pick up a victory. The teams are fairly even matched, so look for a close, hard-fought game. Westside is at home and may be slightly better, so the nod goes to them... Westside 20, Hillcrest 13.

DORMAN AT BOILING SPRINGS: The improved Bulldogs have confidence that they can pull a big upset in this one. To do so, they must slow Kendrick Lynch, and realistically, I'm not sure they have the defense to slow him quite enough. But if the Cavs are looking ahead to the next two weeks, they may live to regret it. Dave Gutshall knows that with Byrnes and Spartanburg on tap, the Cavs really need this one, and he will have his boys focused and ready to play... Dorman 34, Boiling Springs 14.

BYRNES AT GAFFNEY: On paper, the Rebels would win easily. But playing at The Reservation is never an easy task for visiting teams and Byrnes had best not look past Gaffney. The Indians will give Byrnes a scrap, but they just won't have enough answers for the high-octane Rebel offense... Byrnes 38, Gaffney 20

LAURENS AT SPARTANBURG: The Raiders have improved, but the are still not in the Viking's class. Spartanburg should continue to roll on... Spartanburg 35, Laurens 13.

FORT MILL AT RIDGE VIEW: The Blazers were very impressive last week at South Florence, particularly on defense. Perhaps it is starting to come together some for Ridge View. The winless Yellow Jackets should be their second staight victim... Ridge View 24, Fort Mill 7.

SPRING VALLEY AT NORTHWESTERN: Trojans, beware. This will not be an easy game. The Vikings have scored a lot of points this season, and they knocked off a very good Sumter team last week. Spring Valley should hold its own in this one. But it will be a lot to ask of Spring Valley to overcome District Three stadium and that vaunted Trojan defense... Northwestern 28, Spring Valley 17.

ROCK HILL AT LANCASTER: The Bruins have played well at times this year, but the Bearcats probably have them overmatched... Rock Hill 27, Lancaster 7.

WHITE KNOLL AT AIKEN: White Knoll is not as bad as its 1-5 record might indicate, as they have played several close games. But the Hornets should be able to pull this one out at home... Aiken 21, White Knoll 10.

NORT AUGUSTA AT LEXINGTON: This game has the makings of a shootout with two great offense going at each other. It should be a very entertaining game, and both teams have a chance to win. But the Yellow Jacket defense has not seen anything close to the likes of Demetrius Summers, and I think Meat may be the difference here... Lexington 38, North Augusta 28.

ORANGEBURG-WILKINSON AT SOUTH AIKEN: This is another game in which I feel that either team could come out on top. The Bruins have a very talented team, and the Thoroughbred's non-region schedule may not have prepared them for region play. But Rashad Hunter is a load for anyone. I say O-W wins an entertaining, hard-fought game... O-W 26, South Aiken 21.

AIRPORT AT IRMO: The Yellow Jacket defense might be the best in the state. It will sting the winless Airport Eagles all night and keep them completely grounded... Irmo 28, Airport 0.

DUTCH FORK AT RICHLAND NORTHEAST: This might turn out to be one of the state's best games this week, as we have two evenly matched teams going at it here. Once again, either team could win. The Silver Foxes have the better defense of the two, and I think that will make the difference... Dutch Fork 20, Richland NE 14.

LOWER RICHLAND AT SUMTER: The Diamonds have proven that the are a better team than last year, but the Gamecocks have too. Sumter will be looking to rebound from their first defeat and they should be able to do so without too many problems... Sumter 30, Lower Richland 6.

CONWAY AT HARTSVILLE: The Red Foxes have faded somewhat after a good start this season. The Tigers have another solid team this year that features a very good defensive unit, and it should be too much for Hartsville... Conway 27, Hartsville 10.

CRESTWOOD AT MARLBORO COUNTY: The Knights have been disappointing this season, and I no longer see them as a true threat in Region 6. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, are still the Region 6 favorite after all they've been through... Marlboro County 31, Crestwood 12.

SOUTH FLORENCE AT SOCASTEE: The Bruin offense was humbled last week by a hungry Ridge View team. Playing the Braves gives them a good opportunity to get back on track and start Region 6 play with a win... South Florence 28, Socastee 13.

BERKELEY AT GOOSE CREEK: The Stags should be able to pick themselves up and rebound from their stunning 14-point loss to Battery Creek last week. The Gators do not figure to have the talent to stay with Berkeley... Berkeley 31, Goose Creek 14.

WANDO AT JAMES ISLAND: The Warriors have been on a roll the past couple of weeks, but the Trojans will be hungry after being blown out at home by Colleton County last week. I think this will turn out to be a close game, but a much-improved Wando team should get the victory... Wando 21, James Island 17.

STRATFORD AT WEST ASHLEY: The Knights should roll to another victory and remain undefeated. The Wildcats don't seem to be much of a threat to Stratford... Stratford 36, West Ashley 10.

BATTERY CREEK AT COLLETON COUNTY: The Dolphins stunned Berkeley last Friday and have definitely come a long way since the beginning of the season. But the Cougars have a very good team, and they will make sure that they are ready for Battery Creek. This should be another barnburner... Colleton County 26, Battery Creek 24.

BEAUFORT AT FORT DORCHESTER: The young Patriots have be locked into a pattern of win one, lose one, win one, lose one this season. That pattern should continue. Fort Dorchester fell to mighty Stratford last week, but they have not-so-mighty Beaufort this week. The Patriots win easily over the winless Eagles... Fort Dorchester 38, Beaufort 14.

HILTON HEAD AT SUMMERVILLE: The Green Wave should pick up their fifth victory against the Seahawks... Summerville 31, Hilton Head 13.

Judging by the number of times I said "either team could win", this looks to be a fairly challenging week. Hopefully, I will fare well!
