Talking to Conway QB Dakota Derrick you can hear it in his voice. The focus, the energy, the excitement he feels when talking about his Conway squad as they prepare to take on Sumter this Friday night in a key matchup with huge ramifications in their region and the playoff picture as well.

A standout 2008 QB Derrick is the first to tell you where his mindset is. "Honestly the most important thing to me right now is Conway football and after the season we'll worry about the rest of that stuff." You see after losing their season opener to Myrtle Beach Mr. Derrick has guided his squad to 8 consecutive victories as their record stands 8-1 currently. The game versus Sumter on Friday is a huge one for Conway and Sumter both.

"This Friday should be the biggest game we've played so far…they (Sumter) coming off a loss to RNE last week and maybe underestimated those guys. They are probably working harder in practice this week to get prepared for us. It's a big game. This should determine the region championship."

When asked about his team's successful run since their opener Dakota had this to say, "If we can continue to improve each week then we have a shot to make a run at state I think." The Conway also said, "I'd like go as far as we can in the playoffs that's the most important thing to me. Putting W's in the win column for Conway High School."

Unsure about his exact stats as far as his completions and attempts are on the season he did recite the numbers he could remember. "I have completed 65% of my passes. I've thrown for 1900 yards with 21 touchdowns and 4 interceptions this year."

Derrick says his hard work in the offseason has paid off as his current stats attest to. "I worked hard on my fundamentals. Working on form, footwork, and pocket play. I spent a lot of time working my timing with my teammates and studying defenses."

Although his focus remains on leading his team to Williams-Brice Stadium once again this year Dakota talked about his recruitment as well. "Right now Furman, William & Mary, Georgia Southern, and Elon are the schools I'm hearing from the most."

The in-state Paladins appear to have the inside track with Derrick at the moment. "Yes sir, I'm closer to Furman than the others I'd say right now. We've been in contact the longest and I've made the trip up to a few of their games."

"I have an offer from just Newberry College so far. I'm going to wait and see if I get some other offers before I make a decision though."

With a huge game coming up against the Sumter Gamecocks this Friday the Conway star will look to power his squad to yet another victory. SCPrepNation.com will have all the latest regarding Dakota Derrick's senior season and his recruitment so stay tuned.
