SC Pigskin Prep Presents
The Sandlapper Sensational Sixty
We take a mid season look at the top players in South Carolina at this point in the season with the debut of The Sandlapper Sensational Sixty. We have profiled the Top 20 and listed by position the next 40.
This list was compiled with input from multiple sources from around the state including fans, media, web site operators, and information from the National Insiders Recruiting Service. Over 20 sources from around the state have given us their input for this list that I have compiled after taking into account everyone's opinion.
This however is not a recruiting list or a look at the top college prospects but rather a look at the Top High School players in the state. We have purposely tried to recognize players who may not be recruited but are having outstanding years. This list recognizes those players that are having Senior Seasons that are making a difference for their High Schools.
Our criteria for ranking were as follows:
- Is the player making outstanding plays and accomplishments?
- Are the statistics impressive?
- Does the player make his team better?
- Is the team winning games because of the player's input?
- Is the player a TEAM FIRST guy, giving 110% on every play and helping his team win games and improve?
- Is the player making a difference on Friday night
- Is he a leader on the field?
- Are opponents designing their game plan to stop or limit the player?
With that criterion in mind we take a look at the top players in the state and wish these 60 men and the other 10,000 around the state playing the game, the best of luck for the remainder of the 2002 season.
The Sandlapper Sensational Sixty
1 Syvelle Newton QB Marlboro County
Syvelle is still our number 1 player despite an up and down year for the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs are 5-2 but have lost to very good teams and are starting to gel behind Newton's leadership. Syvelle has proven he is a leader on and off the field and has taken his game to the next level at Marlboro County playing QB and defense for the Bulldogs.
College Choices: USC leads with Clemson, Nebraska, UCLA and a host of others following.
2 Eric Young OL Union
Eric takes over a game and Union is a better team because of him. The 300 lb lineman runs like a tailback, blocks like an All Pro and has the technique of a seasoned veteran. Watch for this guy on Sunday in the future.
College Choices: USC and Tennessee appear to be neck and neck
3 Demetris Summers RB Lexington
Perhaps the best college prospect in the state with sensational numbers but the team is only 1-4 with him in the lineup and 9-10 over the past 2 years.
College Choices: USC leads strongly with Clemson and Florida St close behind
4 Noah Whiteside WR Greenville
Last year it was "Noah who". Now it is "did you see what Noah did last Friday Night". 57 catches for 1278 yards and 15 touchdowns has Noah looking for the state record book. A sensational talent with speed, knowledge and vision. He could start as a true freshman next season in college.
College Choices: USC strong lean with Pittsburgh far behind.
5 Rodney Kinlaw RB Stratford
There were question marks before the season but Rodney has answered them all. Stratford is 7-0; Rodney is averaging over 10 yards a carry and the touchdowns and wins keep coming.
College Choices: Clemson is pressing hardest with UNC, USC, Wake Forest and Penn St. in the hunt
6 Marcus Howard LB Hanahan
Marcus continues to show well on Friday nights and Hanahan is winning games by wide margins. 63 tackle 3 sacks 1 interception and a fumble recovery on the season. An incredible 2 sport athlete, Maurice works hard on the field and the weight room to improve his game.
College Choices: Strong Clemson lean with USC and UGA in the mix
7 Demetrius Morant RB Crestwood
Crestwood was a pre season favorite in D2 but a slow start has the Knights struggling for a playoff spot. Morant has done his job with over 1000 yards and 8 TD but the Knights are only 3-4
College Choices: Clemson lean with USC and UNC trailing.
8 Ryan Brown LB Berkeley
Ryan is healthy for the first time in 2 years but his game has slipped a bit. He may be struggling with the longer season but we are confident that Ryan w
College Choices: Everyone in the Southeast including Florida, Maimi, UNC, NC State, Tennessee and USC. Most think USC is the team to beat
9 Maurice Nelson DB Crestwood
Maurice is still the No. 1 DB in the state and is looking at some big time offers from schools around the southeast.
College Choices: Clemson is the leader with his brother playing for the Tigers with USC, Tennessee, Maryland and Georgia competing also
10 Justin Durant LB Wilson
78 tackles in 7 games puts this Florence native in the lead among all players in the state for tackles. He also has 6 sacks and Wilson is among the Top 10 teams in the state.
11 Tremaine Billie RB Dreher
The USC commit has led the Blue Devils to a strong start with 1300 yards on the ground and 14 touchdowns. The speedy back is also playing DB and has intercepted 4 passes. The Blue Devils are thinking playoffs and their Senior Capitan is leading the way
College Choices: USC Verbal Commit
12 Nathaniel Smith RB Georgetown
He may be under the radar screen for some high school fans but the Bulldogs in Georgetown know his number and so do schools around the Southeast. A speedy back with 4.58 speed, Smith has led the Bulldogs to a 4-3 start.
College Choices: Strong lean to UNC which has offered, waiting on the in state schools.
13 Tray Rodgers LB Irmo
Any question on whether he inherited his father's genes has been answered. Without doubt the most improved player in the state on defense. A man that has worked hard and has made his game better and has taken Irmo to an undefeated season
College Choices: USC Verbal Commit
14 David Smith WR Union
The Union wide out continues to impress and his stats are growing each week. Teams are double teaming this season and he still is averaging 6 catches a game with a new QB.
College Choices: USC Verbal Commit
15 Rashad Hunter RB South Aiken
Are you kidding me??? That is the thought around the state each week when you see Hunter's stat line. 238 carries, 1810 yards and 17 TD in just 7 games. But more important to Rashad and the Thoroughbreds is a 6-1 record and a shot at the playoffs for the first time since 1994
College Choices: The new kid on the recruiting block. This kid is a find and will make someone very happy. He could be in the Top 5 or 10 by season's end.
16 Terrell Allen WR Byrnes
Speed to burn. Defenses are structuring their entire package around Allen and he is seeing double and triple teaming as well as 3 deep zones. But the Rebels are adjusting and are sitting at 6-1, perfect in state, heading into the big region match ups with Dorman and Byrnes.
College Choices: Clemson is a leader but USC, Alabama, Texas and Georgia are in contention.
17 Ronnie McGill RB Clover
Talking about MVP, this guy never leaves the field and is doing it on the offensive and defensive side of the ball. Over 1100 yards on offense with 11 scores and 50 tackles from strong safety makes McGill one of the top players in the state
College Choices: Stated he wants to go to USC but has not been offered yet
18 Johnathan Hefney QB / DB Rock Hill
He runs he passes, he tackles and he returns kicks; he simply is Mr. Everything. Last week against Lancaster he threw for a TD, ran for another and took a kick off for a third. Rock Hill has their best shot at a State Title in a decade and Hefney will lead them to the Promised Land.
College Choices: Tennessee has offered but USC is his first choice and he is waiting for an offer.
19 Eric McCollum QB Camden
The All State QB for the defending 3A champion has added a new title to his resume, leader. Eric is over 1300 yard passing and 15 touchdowns in just 7 games. Camden is the No. 1 in 3A and the Bulldogs are thinking repeat. This exceptional signal caller will lead the Dogs on the field and off the field all the way to Columbia.
College Choices: Penn St and Wake Forest have offered waiting to hear from in state schools.
20 KO Simpson DB / WR Rock Hill
Another two way star for the Bearcats. He anchors the best secondary in the state and play the Flanker for the Cats. 19 catches, 4 touchdowns on offense, 58 tackles and 3 interceptions on defense. His future is on the defense and colleges are drooling over this massive and fast defensive back.
College Choices: No offers from the Division 1 schools yet but they should be around soon. USC, Clemson, UNC and NC State are all interested
The remaining 40 players on our list just prove the depth of talent in South Carolina this year.
