Douglas Mack is a soft spoken young man but his play on the football field speaks volumes. Mack had over 100+ tackles for the Yellow Jackets this season. Mack had 63 solo tackles and 43 assists. He also had 3 sacks, 3 knockdowns, 3 forced fumbles, and 4 quarterback hurries as well. This year Mack lined up at linebacker. At 6'0 160 pounds the 2010 prospect packed a wallop for opposing offenses. Currently he projects as a safety in our opinion but given 2 more years to grow and add weight/strength he may eventually wind up as a linebacker.
When asked about his strengths on the field Mack replied, "I'd have to say my nose for the ball is my biggest strength." He recalled some of his brightest moments this season for the Yellow Jackets as well. "I think maybe when I made Union County's RB Marcus Whitener do a flip and when I locked down J.L. Mann's J.T. Floyd because he is one of the state's top prospects." Whitener is one of the state's leading rushers and Floyd is a highly recruited standout which gives an example of the versatility Mack brings to the table.
Those moments were big ones for Mack but he says his best game this season came against cross town rivals Byrnes. "I had 10 solo tackles, a sack that caused a fumble, I dropped an interception, and 3 tackles for loss. It was so memorable because they are a top school and I played at a top notch level against them."
Mack is already working hard in the weight room to add strength and speed. Other areas he says he'd like to improve on include becoming a better open field tackler.
The Yellow Jackets will lose 13 seniors this year but a great deal of their talent will return next season. Mack talked about his expectations of next year's squad, "I am real excited about next season. We are going to be real good now that all of our young players now have varsity experience, and the future for Greer High football is real bright."
Mack has set some personal goals for next season as well. "I would like to lead the area if not the state in tackles and be a big part of my team success next season."
The 2010 standout already has some ideas as to what he's looking for in a college and what major he'd like to pursue as well and shared those with us. "Getting a good education and playing time will be the biggest factors for me. I would like to major in business management."
A number of regional schools top his early list of schools that he's most interested in hearing from. "I would like to hear from South Carolina, Georgia, Clemson, Appalachian State, Georgia Tech, and Illinois."
