Summerville Earns Another Shot At the Title

The Summerville Green Wave dug deep and found a way to pull out a comeback victory over the two time defending AAAA Division 1 champions Gaffney on Friday night. brings you the rundown and talked with star QB Reid McCollum (pictured) about the game and their matchup with Byrnes next weekend.

In a game that showcased two of the most storied football programs in the Palmetto State, the Summerville/Gaffney match-up, more than lived up to its hype and expectations. The game came down to the wire, but in the end, the Summerville Green Wave found a way to squeak out a 1-point victory over the Gaffney Indians.

Down 22-16 in the fourth quarter, Summerville's QB, Reid McCollum, threw a touchdown strike to WR LaQuan Gilliard to even the score at 22. Senior kicker, David Behr, nailed the extra point to give the Green Wave a 23-22 lead over the Indians with 60 seconds remaining.

Gaffney had one more chance to try and pull off the upset. But Summerville's Kyrie McClellan, picked off a pass in the closing seconds to seal the win for the Green Wave. "We weren't ready to go home last night," McCollum said. "We knew we had to make something happen in order to move on. Things just happened to work out for us in the end."

Summerville advances to the Class AAAA Division I State Championship Game to face the Byrnes Rebels. McCollum told that his team has been looking forward to playing in the title game once again, and that they are certainly looking forward to the challenge. "We are real excited, and we're really looking forward to next weekend," McCollum said. "Byrnes is a really good team. So, we're just ready to go out and have a good week of practice, watch them on film, and prepare for next week's game. I'm very excited."
