We haven't featured too many 2011 players yet but Greer High School has a player that should be a major player on the recruiting scene over the next few years. Will Sales is just a freshman but the staff at Greer High knew he was good enough to start on the varsity squad from day one. That's right Sales started on the varsity team as a freshman and what he did in his first game was simply amazing. Taking on a talented Daniel High squad Sales got his career off to a great start. "Yeah the Daniel game was probably my most memorable. It was memorable because it was my first varsity game and I had 15 tackles and 1 sack."
Asked what it was like for him to start as a freshman he replied, "It was fun but at the same time it was hard cause I had to play with people that are a lot older than me." Once he got that first game under his belt everyone realized that Sales is the real deal and that he indeed was the right person for the job at linebacker.
Sales at 5'10 205 pounds brings the wood when making stops for the Yellow Jackets. He finished the season with 65 solo tackles and 3 sacks. It's obvious that he has a good frame for the position but one area where he differs compared to most freshmen is in the weight room. Will bench presses 275 pounds and squats 400 pounds. He also runs the 40 yard dash in 4.7 seconds. You have to keep in mind that this youngster is just a freshman and more than likely will only continue to make strides in all of those areas over the next few seasons.
This past season was a memorable one for Will as he learned plenty from his first taste of action against the rigors of AAA play. He talked about some of the memorable battles for him this past season. "Clinton was one of the toughest teams we faced because they were so big and had speed." He also said that cross town rival Byrnes had the toughest player he faced all season in 2010 RB Marcus Lattimore.
Sales is optimistic about the Yellow Jackets future despite their 3-7 record this year. "I am ready for next season already because I think we will be ready. We have a good chance of winning state with so many players coming back next year." Greer has normally always had a strong team each season and there's plenty of youth in their program to support Sales' thoughts about getting much better next season as a team.
From a personal standpoint Sales says he's already hard at work to improve his abilities on the field. "I'm always in the weight room. I want to get bigger and faster." As for now he says that he isn't thinking too much about college with 3 more seasons ahead of him. If he continues to make plays and continue his development at the rate he's going he'll need to start sorting through the tons of mail he'll be getting from colleges all across the country soon.
SCPrepNation.com will keep a close eye on Will Sales as he projects as one of the players to watch out for early on in the 2011 class so keep it locked right here.
