RNE scrapped hard and played their way into the AAAA playoffs. We caught up with head basketball coach Jason Powell to talk about the Cavaliers season and bright future powered by sophomores Malcolm Rhett and Larry Sumter. Come inside and check out what the RNE coach had to say about his Cavaliers squad as they've worked hard, persevered, and battled for their playoff berth.

Jason Powell Q&A
Richland Northeast Boys Basketball Coach

KF: What has this season been like for you?
JP: This season started out with such promise. After Christmas we were 10-3 going into region play and after our two major injuries we struggled. The injuries may have been a blessing though, it allowed these four sophomores to get a lot of experience playing together against some stiff competition. Hopefully that will pay off in the long run.

KF: Having lost a few players to injury are you proud of how your young players have stepped up so far?
JP: I am proud of the way they have competed but I would have liked for Malcolm to have stepped up his game a little more but that is a part of growing pains we have to go through with a young team.

KF: What team is the toughest that you've faced so far, why?
JP: Pinewood Prep was definitely the best team we played all year because they had 5 guys that were capable of scoring 20 each night. They were tough to match up with. Lower Richland is a close second because of their trapping style of defense.

KF: What is your outlook for the rest of the season and possibly any thoughts about the team next year?
JP: It will be disappointing if we don't make it but understandable due to the injury problems we have had this year. (During this interview Powell was uncertain if his RNE squad would make the playoffs) I am really excited about next season with this group. We have 11 guys coming back next year.

NOTE:Coach Jason Powell and his Richland Northeast Cavaliers will play the defending AAAA Lower State champions Summerville on Wednesday.
