It's hard to believe that the regular season is just about over. Only two weeks from now, we will be starting the playoffs! Last week, Big C produced a record of 21-3. While I always srtive for perfection, I'll take 87.5% anytime. Let's look at this week's games:
GREENWOOD AT WESTSIDE: With victories over Hanna and Mauldin, the Eagles have likely wrapped up another Region 1 championship, and Westside should be a mere bump in the road to that title. The Rams do own two region wins themselves, they have not beaten any teams of Greenwood's caliber. The Eagles will continue to roll... Greenwood 28, Westside 7.
HILLCREST AT EASLEY: This game will decide who finishes last in Region 1 and will be Easley's chance to avoid a winless season. I don't think the Green Wave will do it. Neither of these teams have shown very much this year, but the Green Wave have shown me less than Hillcrest has... Hillcrest 21, Easley 13.
T.L. HANNA AT MAULDIN: This game is likely for second place in Region 1. I think the Yellow Jackets have shown that they are a solid number two in this region due in large part to displaying a more explosive offense and a stingier defense than the Mavericks have... Hanna 28, Mauldin 14.
DORMAN AT GAFFNEY: After losing the two biggest games on their schedule, Dorman will try to use the next two weeks to regain some confidence for the playoffs. While a trip to the Reservation should never be taken lightly, reality is that the Cavaliers should be able to win this game if they have any pride left at all. The Indians really believe they can pull an upset and they will be fired up, so the game might be interesting... Dorman 30, Gaffney 19.
BOILING SPRINGS AT LAURENS: This game will be a battle between Michael Blackley and Eric Sullivan, two very talented running backs. It should be a really good one. The nod goes to the home team in a close one... Laurens 20, Boiling Springs 14.
BYRNES AT SPARTANBURG: This is the premiere game in the state this week. The Rebels have great talent all over the field and they seem unstoppable right now. While the Vikings are a very good team with one of the best coaches in the business, I feel that it will take almost a perfect game on the Vikings' part to knock off Byrnes. That's hard to do... Byrnes 28, Spartanburg 21.
FORT MILL AT SPRING VALLEY: The Vikings should even their Region record at 2-2 against the winless Yellow Jackets and set up a rivarly showdown with Ridge View next week that will likely be for third place in Region 3 behind the Rock Hill schools... Spring Valley 35, Fort Mill 7.
NORTHWESTERN AT LANCASTER: The Trojans should have no problem with the Bruins provided they are not looking ahead to the Rock Hill game too much. Northwestern's defense looks to be way too much for Lancaster to handle... Northwestern 30, Lancaster 0.
RIDGE VIEW AT ROCK HILL: While the Blazers are an improved team, they proved last week that they are still not ready to run with the big dogs by losing to Northwestern by 51. Many believe that the Bearcats may be the biggest dog of them all. The Bearcats should revail uneventfully, again provided that they are not looking ahead to next week too much... Rock Hill 35, Ridge View 7.
AIKEN AT NORTH AUGUSTA: It's been a disappointing season for the Green Hornets, who have not been as effective on offense as they had hoped. While this game, like so many in Region 4, could go either way, the Yellow Jackets have more offensive talent and more momentum, so they are given the nod... North Augusta 20, Aiken 14.
ORANGEBURG-WILKINSON AT LEXINGTON: This game is unpredictable because one never knows which Bruin team is going to show up. Since the Wildcats will be playing this one at home, have gotten on a roll with three straight wins, and have so much more momentum than O-W right now, they get the nod. But the Bruins can beat about anyone on any given night... Lexington 28, O-W 20.
WHITE KNOLL AT SOUTH AIKEN: This game features two teams that have both made great improvements over last season. This one looks like it could go either way at this point, but a stud like Rashaad Hunter makes me lean slightly towards the Thoroughbreds against a Timerwolve offense that sometimes struggles to put points on the board... South Aiken 14, White Knoll 10.
IRMO AT RICHLAND NORTHEAST: The Cavaliers will definitely not be a pushover for the Yellow Jackets. Irmo had better be careful and not go into this game overconfident after a big victory over Sumter last week. But Irmo's defense makes it hard to pick against them... Irmo 17, Richland NE 7.
LOWER RICHLAND AT AIRPORT: An improved Diamonds team will earn their third win of the season against a winless Eagles team that really has had a difficult time scoring on anyone. Lower Richland avoids the Region 5 basement... Lower Richland 20, Airport 13.
SUMTER AT DUTCH FORK: The Silver Foxes are a good team with a very solid defense, so the Gamecocks are going to have to get the Irmo game completely out of their minds for this one if they want to rebound. I believe Sumter will do so. It will be a struggle, but Sumter prevails... Sumter 17, Dutch Fork 14.
This is hard work. I have to go home now so I won't miss The Simpsons. To be continued...
