AAAA Girls Upper State Recap: Cavaliers Win!

The Dorman Cavaliers had the size advantage and forced their will on the smaller yet quicker Stallions of South Pointe. Ashlen Dewart (pictured) guided the way for the Cavaliers as they won the AAAA Upper State Title 55-45. Inside some quick notes and recap of the game action.

Below are some of my notes from the AAAA Upper State Title Game between Dorman and South Pointe. I had to be brief with my notes as I was also taking photographs of the game tonight too.

Dorman vs South Pointe Notes
Just looking over the two squads it appears Dorman has a size advantage but in turn that more than likely means South Pointe is going to be the quicker team. Dorman starts strongly behind the play of 6'3 junior Ashlen Dewart's play in the post. The teams battle back and forth in the first quarter and neither team really takes charge. At the end of first Dorman 15-13.

Ashlen Dewart is a force down low posting up on the low block. Too strong for her defenders. Dorman has more size but South Pointe is starting to realize that they have the quickness advantage and should take advantage of it soon.

South Pointe goes on a quick 4-0 run to start the 2nd. South Pointe is more assertive in the 2nd and Dorman is struggling with their speed. Ashlen Dewart makes a tough bucket and gets the foul call as well to bring it to 22-19. She makes the extra free throw and brings the score to 22-20 in favor of South Pointe with 3:08 to go in 2nd.

South Pointe PG #12 Chelsea Douglas at 5'5 is too fast for the Dorman defenders it appears and gets into the lane with ease scoring buckets pushes it to 24-20 SP. Douglas is just a sophomore so she will be one to watch in the 2010 class. Dewart plays good position defense. LaShana Booker nails a crucial 3pointer at 1:15 mark to make it 24-23 SP. After a 1-2 trip to the line by South Pointe Ashlen Dewart makes another bucket under the basket to tie the game going into the half at 25 all.

South Pointe starts the 2nd half off with a TO. Dorman goes to the bucket and AD gets an offensive rebound and putback. Dorman JR G Fanchon Sartor shows good pace and makes a great pullup jumper deciding not to make the bad pass through traffic to a teammate running the floor making it 29-25 Dorman.

I've noticed that Chelsea Douglas isn't handling the ball much for South Pointe early in the 2nd half after demonstrating that she can take her defender off the dribble. Douglas drops a jumper to make it it 29-27 Dorman and Fanchon Sartor answers with a big 3 pointer to make it 32-27. Dewart is flexing her muscles inside on the boards. Douglas gets called for walking at 4:31 in the 3rd. Allison Karabinos off the bench for Dorman makes a nice up and under bucket to make it 34-27. She then runs the floor and gets a bucket and the foul call with 2:52 to go. She makes the free throw to make it 37-27 Dorman. End of the 3rd Dorman 38-31 after AK makes 1 of 2 from the line after grabbing a hustle rebound and getting fouled with just 0.1 seconds left.

Dewart gets Dorman off to a quick start with another bucket down low to push it to 40-31. South Pointe's Ashawana Bost gets fouled on a 3 pointer and capitalizes knocking down all 3 FTs to make it 40-34. Douglas forced a bad shot against the 2-3 defense and came up empty.

Dorman is establishing their size advantage and South Pointe is struggling with Dorman's zone defense. Dewart is too strong down low for the South Pointe defenders and gets more easy buckets. Dorman's Danielle Gibson knocks down 2 FTs to push it to 46-37 for the Cavaliers. Dorman is showing their playoff experience and size late in this one down the stretch. Douglas knocks down 1-2 from the line to make it 46-38. Dewart once again utilizes her size and positions herself for another offensive rebound and gets fouled. She makes 2-2 to put Dorman ahead 48-38. There are not a lot of weaknesses with this Dorman team.

Douglas uses a nice spin move to find a teammate low on the block for an easy bucket 48-40 Dorman. Bost is scrappy and shows great intensity wanting to do whatever it takes to help her team win. Things getting tight with 3 minutes to go. South Pointe only trails by 5 now. Dorman decides to slow it down and run their offense but ends up turning it over on 2 consecutive possessions leaving the door open for South Pointe who can't seem to capitalize on their fortunes. Douglas misses a 3 pointer but Tiana Hemphill gets the offensive rebound and putback to close it to 48-45 with 1:19 to go.

Ashlen Dewart gets fouled with 1 minute to go and stepped up and missed the front end of a 1 and 1. Douglas missed a nice floater in the lane that could've cut it to 1 but Dorman snags the rebound and calls timeout with 39.2 seconds left. South Pointe has good pressure on the in-bounds but fouls quickly sending Lashana Booker to the line and she knocks down 1-2 to make 49-45. South Pointe gets a 3 pointer blocked by Dewart and Dorman gets the rebound. Fanchon Sartor gets fouled and goes to the line with 21.7 seconds left and makes 2-2 to 51-45. SP shoots another air ball and things are looking doubtful for the Stallions after a good comeback attempt.

Final score 55-45. The Dorman High School Lady Cavaliers are the AAAA Upper State Champions.
