Keema Blakney Commits!!!!

One school moved swiftly and offered 2009 G Keema Blakney of Southside High School. After a visit and some time to ponder things the ultra-athletic guard decided it was time to give a verbal to the school. Come inside and see what D1 school Keema Blakney has verbaled to.

Things are looking up at Southside High School for the girls basketball team. Coming off an outstanding season with a 19-8 record the Lady Tigers boast 2 college prospects in the 2009 class. G Keema Blakney is one of the most athletic guards you'll find in the state and college programs are already putting her high on their recruiting board. One school decided they loved what they saw in Blakney and put an offer on the table, in return the 2009 standout decided it was time to verbal to the program.

At 5'8 135 pounds Blakney is not a huge guard but she makes up for it in pure athleticism and tremendous dedication to the defensive end of the floor. "Yeah my defense is one of my biggest strengths on the court. If my shot doesn't fall then I make sure that I go back and shut my opponent down. The thing I love most about defense is that I can make people get frustrated and they shutdown. People get frustrated and you can get a lot of steals when you get into their head and score points off those turnovers."

Last season she averaged 11 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals per game. She is also a co-captain of the team. Blakney also shoots the ball extremely well on the perimeter. She continues to workout strenuously during the offseason to improve her all-around abilities. She works out with pro player Eric Williams on a regular basis to accomplish those goals.

The 2009 prospect just verbally committed to Mercer University over the weekend and she talked about what she liked the most about the Mercer program. "The thing I liked most about Mercer is that they have a real strong academic program. They have a really good accounting program. I've talked with some of the professors and academic advisors and they are there to support you. The coaches are nice and they make sure they will take care of you. It's not a real big campus. I love that about them."

Still programs such as Georgetown, Brown, Western Carolina, Tennessee State, Radford, Francis Marion, and Coastal Carolina have continued to show high interest in Blakney's talents. Does the verbal to Mercer put everyone else interested in the dark? "If other colleges come see me play AAU ball and they like what they see then that's fine. I'm not against it but I'm comfortable with my decision. For now though I don't see any changes happening because I really really like what Mercer University brings to the table for me."

Blakney's athleticism also occurs on the track as well. She just qualified in three different events for this coming weekend's state championships. "I qualified for the 200 meters, 400 meters, and 4x400 meters. I feel my chances are very good. I feel good about my chances in the 400 meters especially. I think I can be first in the state. I want to try at least get 2nd or 3rd in the 200 meters as well."

Keema's talents have already earned her a scholarship and she continues to push the envelope to become even better. She also performs equally as well in the classroom as well. She sports a 3.8 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society. She also has a famous cousin as well in former UNC and NBA player Shammond Williams who is still starring overseas in Spain after playing with the Los Angeles Lakers last season.
