In the McKie household those backyard tangles, battles on the hardwood, and throughout their formative have proved to be somewhat of a toughening barometer for the McKie brothers. Joshua McKie, a 2009 verbal commit to North Carolina, emerged in a big way prior to his junior season last year and has become one of the state's top players. His younger brother, Jeremiah McKie, has been patiently waiting in the shadows of big brother over the past season. This past Friday though he kicked the door down along with his brother Josh in a convincing 28-7 victory for Mauldin over bitter rivals Hillcrest.
Jeremiah is a 2011 prospect who already has a good frame and great speed. At 6'0 170 pounds he's still growing and from the looks of it will be making plenty of noise for the Mavericks on the gridiron over the next three seasons. The younger McKie talked about his performance against Hillcrest this past Friday night, "I felt like what I had worked for all spring and summer had paid off." Being such a heated rivalry between the two schools there was definitely bragging rights on the line and McKie said there was one thing on his mind going into the matchup. "My mindset coming into the game was to come in but not just beat them but to beat them bad!"
The offseason workouts paid off nicely for McKie as he went out and caught 4 passes for 165 yards and 2 touchdowns on the night. Oh those touchdown catches were coming from big brother Josh McKie who also added another rushing touchdown to help his team knock off the Rams.
"This past offseason I worked on getting in shape and getting a lot stronger. I also increased my knowledge of the game as well." Still Jeremiah knows there are two vital elements that will help increase his stock and rise in the rankings. "I still want to get even faster and stronger."
It's still early for the 2011 prospect but an SEC program has already made contact with him he says, "Yeah I got a questionaire from South Carolina already." McKie also has an early list of favorites he shared with us too. "I like Michigan, Oregon, and Florida. If I had to name a top 3 though I'd say it would be Michigan, LSU, and Oregon."
Although he's starting to share some of the notoriety that his brother Josh has obtained over the past few seasons Jeremiah's focus is on his Mauldin Mavericks team as a whole. "My goals for the team are to make it to the playoffs. I do not really have any goals set for myself this year. I just hope to help my team to play good every game.
Asked about how it felt to partner up with big brother in that huge win on Friday night he said, "It's actually kind of cool because its like we have this thing going on on the field that he knows when I'm open and when I'm not."
Given that they are brothers we had to ask who was the better athlete of the two to which Jeremiah replied, "I play a different variety of sports but he's better than me at most of them only because he's older. So I would say he's the better athlete. Of course I am better looking though."
Wait until Josh hears about this....
